About The Position

Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to perform security work within the Department of Detention. Work involves controlling access to and within the detention facility/housing unit of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. Employees coordinate and document all movement within the detention facility/housing unit on an assigned shift. Position monitors closed circuit television cameras, telephones, alarm systems, intercom panels and/or control panel doors. Work involves maintaining strict adherence to rules and regulations and safety/security procedures. Work assignments and instructions are received from an administrative superior who reviews work methods and results through observation, reports and conferences. Performs related work as directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
  • Six (6) months full-time paid work experience in clerical, data entry, public contact and/or customer service work.
  • Compliance with requirement to adhere to uniformed dress code criteria.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon the ability to participate in and satisfactorily complete within the initial probationary period the established in-house training program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or training involving jail operations, detention, security, police aide work, or explorer program preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered. Such experience must be clearly documented for consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the proper operation of all electronic functioning doors, security devices/alarms; controls access to and within the detention facility/housing unit.
  • Alerts certified personnel to conditions or circumstances which may inhibit the efficient operations of the facility; provides recommendations for resolution as appropriate.
  • Monitors closed circuit television cameras, telephones, alarm systems, intercom panels and/or control panel doors.
  • Coordinates and documents all movement, maintains accurate entries in electronic and/or handwritten logbooks.
  • Maintains strict adherence to rules and regulations and safety/security procedures.
  • Monitors and maintains visual and verbal contact with the housing unit Deputy to ensure safety and security.
  • Accountable for all keys, restraining devices and all other emergency equipment assigned to the post.
  • Monitors in-house radio transmissions to maintain an awareness of activities in other areas of the assigned facility.
  • Receives security calls or security checks from designated posts.
  • Alerts appropriate personnel of security violations and potentially threatening situations.
  • Controls exit and entry to doors, hallways, elevators, and sally ports.
  • Contacts designated personnel in case of an emergency.
  • Reviews procedures for response to emergency situations.
  • Controls and monitors access to and movement within the detention facility by operating remote control panels for gates and doors.
  • Checks identification of all persons entering/exiting controlled areas.
  • Monitors safety of deputies, visitors, and inmates.
  • Generates work orders for nonworking equipment.
  • Serves as a communications liaison in the event of an emergency in the detention facility/housing unit.
  • Communicate with inmates in housing units via the intercom system to direct, advise and provide verbal commands to assist deputies maintain order and ensure compliance with facility rules and regulations.
  • Uses a computer terminal for data input and retrieval of various inmate information, as applicable to assigned functional area.
