About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to maintain the security and safety of inmates, staff, and the public at the County correctional facility. This role involves processing inmates, supervising inmate activity, transporting inmates, conducting security checks, screening mail, responding to inmate requests, preparing documentation, and operating various equipment. The position may also involve supervising inmates on outside work details, performing maintenance tasks, and assisting with various facility operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Six months of experience in security or law enforcement
  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license
  • Certified in CPR and First Aid
  • Possess and maintain certification as a Deputy Sheriff, Detention Officer
  • Ability to calculate and/or tabulate data.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculate decimals and percentages; utilize principles of fractions; and interpret graphs.
  • Ability to apply principles of rational systems; interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
  • Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 200 pounds).
  • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals.
  • Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.

Responsibilities

  • Processes inmates into the facility, including intake, fingerprinting, photographing, and explaining charges.
  • Supervises and observes inmate activity, directs and disciplines inmates, and physically restrains them as necessary.
  • Monitors inmates in segregation and supervises trustees and interns.
  • Transports inmates to work details, court, and medical facilities.
  • Conducts head counts, makes rounds, checks security devices, and conducts shakedowns for contraband.
  • Assists with searching, receiving, searching, and releasing transferred inmates.
  • Supervises inmates during meals, yard calls, visitation, and telephone use.
  • Assists with administering medication, first aid, and responding to medical requests.
  • Supervises routine cleaning and maintenance activities within the prison.
  • Screens incoming mail, packages, and vehicles for contraband.
  • Responds to inmate requests, answers questions, and verbally disciplines inmates for minor violations.
  • Answers questions via telephone and for law enforcement agencies.
  • Prepares and completes various forms, logs, reports, and correspondence; enters data into the computer.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, and the public to coordinate work activities and exchange information.
  • May supervise inmates on outside work detail, maintaining grounds, painting, and maintaining the jail's interior and exterior.
  • Operates a computer, calculator, digital camera, handcuffs, general office equipment, vehicle, two-way radio, lawn maintenance equipment, chain saw, drill, saws, hand tools, or other equipment as necessary.
  • Picks up and delivers items to/from storage building, tag office, and schools.
  • Picks up uniforms for Detention when needed.
  • Supervises inmates picking up roadside trash.
