Under general supervision, the Detention Officer performs security-related tasks supporting the Juvenile Detention Center, specifically in the female unit. State guidelines require detainees to be managed by same-sex individuals. The position requires a Federal NCIC background check and fingerprinting before employment and every five years thereafter. The incumbent must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certifications, become certified in the use of .2% Oleoresin Capsicum (O.C.) and certain unarmed physical restraint techniques, and complete required defensive-driving or emergency-vehicle training before operating a County-owned vehicle. This is a safety-sensitive, in-person position with regular and punctual attendance requirements. It is considered essential during inclement weather, and the incumbent may have to report to or remain at work during administrative closings. Overtime may be required to maintain safe staffing levels, but offered overtime is not guaranteed. Holiday or weekend work, irregular hours, rotating shifts, and shift extensions on short notice may be required. Work may involve exposure to infectious diseases and potential injury from hostile or antisocial people. The incumbent may occasionally need to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. Employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing under specified circumstances, including pre-employment, reasonable cause, after an on-the-job accident, random testing, return to duty, and follow-up testing.
