About The Position

Under administrative direction, the purpose of this position is to provide clerical and administrative support within the Department of Detention utilizing on-line legal reference software. Work involves retrieving legal research as requested in writing by inmates. Employee provides reference assistance services requested by inmates through the Department’s written request system. Employee processes research materials for distribution; helps distribute materials; assists with responding to grievances concerning Inmate Law Library Services; conducts computer searches using Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis or similar online research services; maintains records of requests; answers phones. Work includes application of computer skills and the use of modern office systems technologies to support efficient operations of the Inmate Law Library. Performs related work as directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. An evaluation of foreign high school diploma may be required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of previous experience and/or training in administrative support functions, preferably in a legal or similar judicial process environment.
  • Previous experience with internet searching and electronic database retrieval systems required.
  • Familiarity with legal and business literature, reference sources and terminology required.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of modern office systems technologies and computer software, e.g., Westlaw and/or Lexis/Nexis preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain throughout employment, a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance.
  • Driver license must show current address.
  • All candidates must submit with the application, a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history.
  • Three (3) year, seven (7) year, and online Florida driving history records will not be accepted.
  • If you have possessed a driver's license in any other state in the past 10 years you will need to submit an "entire" driving history from that state.
  • For non-Florida driving histories, please contact that state's division of motor vehicles.
  • The search date for all driving histories must be within one month of the date the application for employment is received by the Bureau of Human Resources.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered. Such training and experience must be clearly documented on the application for consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Retrieves legal research as requested by inmates using on-line legal research reference software and other law library reference materials.
  • Extracts, prints and distributes copies of information that has been requested on the Law Library Request Form by the inmate.
  • Makes arrangements for use of the BSO approved typing service for the inmate if applicable.
  • Maintains date and time logs of law library request forms.
  • Maintains lists of frequently used Florida State Statutes and current law library legal information.
  • Ensures the posting of legal information in housing units to assist inmates with reference materials and the completion of legal requests.
  • Makes copies of various records, reports and documentation, and distributes to appropriate entities.
  • Operates various office equipment, i.e., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Acts as liaison between DOD facilities gathering and relaying information to designated law library sites as needed.
  • Operates an agency vehicle to deliver requested information to various DOD facilities.
