About The Position

The Corporal reports to the Sergeant or Lieutenant as set forth in the chain of command at the Adult or Juvenile facility. Employee is responsible for performing any/all officer duties as required and for monitoring staff and detainees as directed by Sergeant or Lieutenant.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 18 years of age and no felony convictions.
  • 18 months work experience in detention related position.
  • Valid N.M. driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • No DWI conviction within the past three (3) years.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand written and oral instructions in English.
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office.
  • Interact with occupants of the County buildings in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Work independently using good judgment and decision making skills.
  • Work well with ever changing priorities and/or situations.
  • Know and understand County Personnel Policy as well as all County and departmental policies pertinent to the position.
  • Maintain an acceptable attendance record, be punctual and meet established deadlines.
  • Competent in all duties required of a detention officer.
  • Ability to deal with situations requiring tact and understanding and exercise good judgment when needed.
  • Remain alert at all times and be able to react quickly in an emergency situation.
  • Know safety and security measures for dealing with and transporting inmates.
  • Able to maintain control of aggressive detainees and utilize all use of force options.
  • Ability to interact with inmates, supervisors, and staff members in a friendly manner.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Able to write intelligibly and complete reports.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including using computers and electronic equipment.
  • Able to work with minimum supervision and be self motivated.
  • Knowledgeable and proficient in first aid and two-way radio.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, county and departmental laws and policies pertinent to the position.
  • Demonstrated skill in use of equipment utilized by the facility, as well as CYFD regulations and procedures regarding juveniles.
  • Able to direct subordinates in the operation of the facility and maintain a good working relationship with all detention personnel and the detainee population.
  • Possess the ability to write clear, concise reports.
  • Demonstrate sufficient and adequate mental and emotional stability in order to meet the rigors of a supervisory position.
  • Comply with all safety guidelines of Chaves County, Chaves County Road Department, and Chaves County Detention.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years in correctional work and supervision of inmates.
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English.

Responsibilities

  • Directing subordinates in the general operation of a safe, secure facility.
  • Ensuring compliance with OSHA standards for cleanliness, maintenance, health and sanitation requirements.
  • Conducting walk-through inspections of detainee living areas and reports any deficiencies.
  • Issuing verbal and/or written instructions to officers to correct violations.
  • Verifying daily detainee census counts.
  • Compiling and consolidates reports as needed of shift activities and incidents.
  • Keeping subordinates updated on facility and/or County policy and procedures.
  • Providing supervisory coverage of the shift in the Sergeant’s absence.
  • Performing duties at either Adult or Juvenile detention facility.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.
