About The Position

Located along the beautiful shores of Georgian Bay in Simcoe County, the Town of Wasaga Beach is home to the world's longest freshwater beach. We have an exciting opportunity for two Destination Wasaga Piping Plover Technicians to join a new municipal team helping deliver on-the-ground stewardship for one of Ontario’s most iconic natural destinations. The successful candidate(s) will play an important role in building local stewardship capacity, supporting field monitoring and recovery activities, and helping the Town demonstrate that environmental protection, public education, and responsible destination development can work together. Position Overview: Reporting to the Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities, the Destination Wasaga Piping Plover Technician(s) responsibilities will include but are not limited to; beach surveys, nest monitoring, data collection and entry, implementing recovery activities, public outreach and education on beaches and at Town-organized stewardship events, taking images and video content for social media on an iPhone, volunteer coordination. Due to the nature of the fieldwork, this role involves higher-than-typical physical, visual, auditory, public interaction and sustained concentration demands.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or diploma in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field; completion or current enrollment preferred. Relevant formal or informal education and training will be equally considered
  • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C certification
  • Knowledge of or interest in Piping Plovers and identifying target program birds accurately by sight and sound
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent observation and note-taking skills
  • Experience and/or enthusiasm for engaging with members of the public, using various mediums (social media, booth & tent displays, presentations, handout material creation, etc.)
  • Self-initiative with a high level of motivation and energy
  • A keen understanding or willingness to learn about scientific protocols, data, analysis and how the work fits into larger province-wide population assessments and management plans
  • Physically capable of performing required duties and using/wearing appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license (G preferred, G2 accepted), with an acceptable record
  • Ability to provide an acceptable criminal record check, level 1 upon hire
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays

Nice To Haves

  • Experience doing shorebird or other breeding bird surveys is an asset
  • Bilingual (French/English) considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Support the Destination Wasaga Piping Plover Coordinator/Field Biologist with day-to-day activities, volunteer coordination, including supporting volunteer training and scheduling
  • Conduct Piping Plover surveys, monitor nests, and implement recovery activities at Wasaga Beach Area 1 based on standardized protocols developed by the Town of Wasaga Beach in collaboration with Ontario Parks, Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority, Canadian Wildlife Services and Birds Canada
  • Collect, enter and support quality control of site-specific survey data, for provincial and long-term population analyses
  • Conduct stewardship and outreach with the public during surveying, monitoring and Town-organized stewardship events
  • Participate in the development and implementation of additional outreach efforts, Town-organized stewardship events and public presentations, and Town social media and website content, etc.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with volunteers, residents, visitors/beach users, and other stakeholders
  • Complete data entry and proofing, and support data analysis and report writing as needed
