Designer, Technical Development

Saber Power ServicesHouston, TX

About The Position

The Project Development Designer supports the early stages of project execution by developing conceptual engineering drawings, preliminary layouts, and technical documentation used to define project scope, support estimating, and prepare projects for detailed engineering. Working closely with engineers, estimators, procurement, and project development teams, this role transforms engineering concepts into clear, coordinated design packages that improve estimate accuracy, reduce execution risk, and establish a strong foundation for successful project delivery. This position focuses on front-end project development rather than detailed construction design and serves as an important contributor to proposal development, engineering planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Design, or a related technical discipline preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Typically 2–5 years of progressively responsible experience preparing engineering drawings or design documentation in an engineering, utility, industrial, manufacturing, or EPC environment.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and experience developing engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, sketches, specifications, and technical markups.
  • Working knowledge of drafting standards, engineering documentation, and revision control practices.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting conceptual engineering, project development, proposal engineering, or estimating activities.
  • Experience with electrical substations, medium- and high-voltage systems, industrial facilities, renewable energy, or utility infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with engineering document management systems and controlled design environments.
  • Experience with preliminary equipment layouts, one-line diagrams, site plans, and conceptual engineering packages.
  • Knowledge of MicroStation or other engineering design platforms is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare conceptual engineering drawings, one-line diagrams, equipment layouts, site plans, and preliminary design packages supporting project development and estimating activities.
  • Develop estimate-ready drawing packages that clearly communicate project scope, equipment arrangements, and engineering intent.
  • Collaborate with engineers, estimators, procurement, and project development personnel to develop technically accurate conceptual designs.
  • Interpret engineering concepts, sketches, and technical requirements into coordinated design documentation.
  • Apply company drafting standards, templates, and engineering best practices to maintain consistency and quality across conceptual design deliverables.
  • Support quantity takeoffs, preliminary equipment selections, and constructability reviews during project development.
  • Identify design conflicts, missing information, and opportunities to improve project definition before detailed engineering begins.
  • Maintain drawing revisions, document control, and engineering records throughout the project development process.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design standards, reusable drawing content, and engineering workflows within the Technical Infrastructure Platform.
  • Participate in design reviews and cross-functional coordination meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
