In this Design Technician role, you will be part of a dedicated and high-performing R&D team at Medtronic Cardiac Surgery in Brooklyn Park, MN. The R&D team supports the design, development, and commercialization of new and exciting technologies serving our clinician customers. You will work as a key member on small and large technical teams, helping to develop and release new products as well as improving on existing ones. We are working onsite a minimum of 4 days per week as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and vocational or technical education or certification.
  • Requires a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude – practical hands-on experience in machining / fabrication and assembly techniques
  • CAD expertise including advanced modules and methods – PTC Creo and SolidWorks
  • Proficient at creating detailed mechanical drawings for components and assemblies per ASME Y14.5 drafting standards and in compliance with ISO standards
  • Experience in the design and development of complex mechanical devices or equipment
  • Experience using productivity tools, especially Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, Adobe Illustrator, SharePoint, etc.
  • Product Data Management experience with Windchill PDMLink
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) best practices
  • Experience working within a multi-functional team environment
  • A track record in medical device design and implementation into manufacturing
  • Knowledge of Design for Reliability (DFR), Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM), Design for Serviceability, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), Design for Lean Sigma (DFLS) and/or robust design practices
  • Experience in Agile change order creation and release to implement or modify design documentation (BOMs, specifications, drawings)
  • For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Product Development team members to develop new products and processes using the latest 3D solid modeling CAD design tools and best practices
  • Develop design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, sourcing, supplier stakeholders to optimize specification control, manufacturability and supply availability
  • Gather information, prepare original designs, perform tolerance and finite element analysis, present design proposals, negotiate performance/cost/risk/schedule tradeoffs, prepare and release formal documentation/drawings
  • Collaborate with manufacturing / contract manufacturers to ensure designs are robust and manufacturable
  • Use GD&T and other appropriate methods to communicate design intent and promote design reliability and manufacturability
  • Prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects and work tasks to help meet challenging deadlines
  • Communicate with stakeholders, obtain stakeholder engagement to ensure the end products or processes will solve the business problems
  • Develop and improve design environment standard work and best practices to increase design productivity, reliability, manufacturability and cost
