About The Position

The Design System Engineer will mature and promote the Air design system across the organization, expanding its reach, educating teams on its value and integration, and ensuring its infrastructure is usable, accessible, and secure. The role will help define Air as an AI-native system by turning design principles, development standards, and product knowledge into infrastructure that designers, engineers, AI coding tools, and AI agents can use reliably. This includes evolving design tokens, component libraries, documentation, and guidelines. The engineer will connect design and code by building systems that link Figma to production and keep both aligned. They will contribute production code and pull requests, review implementations, improve component APIs and architecture, and build reusable, accessible, flexible, and performant components across React, React Native, and Qt/QML. They will also develop tools and workflows for high-fidelity prototyping with real components and interactive states, exploring AI-powered tooling, MCP integrations, Figma plugins, automation, and design-to-code workflows. The role sets and raises quality standards for accessibility, visual and interaction quality, consistency, component APIs, tokens, naming, documentation, versioning, and adoption. Success means teams and AI tools can confidently use Air, design and code evolve together, teams move faster without sacrificing quality, workflows become more automated, product teams can adopt and contribute with less centralized support, and experiences remain cohesive, accessible, expressive, and thoughtfully crafted across platforms.

Requirements

  • 4–6 years of design engineering or UX engineering experience, preferably in B2B, enterprise, SaaS, or technical product environments.
  • Deep fluency in Figma, including variables, auto layout, prototyping, Dev Mode, and Code Connect.
  • Strong proficiency with React, TypeScript, JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, and deep understanding of component architecture and reusable UI systems.
  • Strong understanding of accessible component design and development, including WCAG, semantic HTML, keyboard interaction, focus management, and ARIA patterns.
  • Fluency in AI-assisted workflows, including canvas-to-code, code-to-canvas, AI prototyping tools, MCP integrations, and emerging tools in this space.
  • Experience with modern design and development tooling such as Storybook, AI coding tools, Git, and component documentation platforms.
  • Track record of working across design and engineering, engaging in design discussions, caring about design intent, and translating that intent into production.
  • Ability to operate with high autonomy, set direction, influence standards, and manage complex projects without extensive supervision.
  • Strong design sensibility and care for craft, consistency, and coherence.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Material UI (MUI), including component architecture, theming, and customization.
  • Experience with React Native and/or Qt/QML; hands-on React experience is required.
  • Experience with WCAG 2.2, ARIA patterns, semantic HTML, APCA, or accessible data visualization.
  • Experience designing or building data visualizations.
  • Experience with embedded or hardware-constrained UI development.
  • Experience with visual regression testing, automated accessibility testing, or CI/CD pipelines for component libraries.

Responsibilities

  • Mature and promote the Air design system across the organization, expanding supported platforms and improving awareness and adoption.
  • Educate teams about Air's value and integration, and ensure design-system infrastructure is usable, accessible, and secure.
  • Help define Air for AI-native interfaces and translate design principles, development standards, and product knowledge into systems for design and code.
  • Evolve design tokens, component libraries, documentation, and guidelines so designers, engineers, AI coding tools, and AI agents can use them reliably.
  • Build systems that connect Figma to production and keep design and code aligned.
  • Build reusable, accessible, flexible, and performant components across React, React Native, and Qt/QML; contribute production code and pull requests, review implementations, and improve component APIs and architecture.
  • Help product teams adopt Air while maintaining quality and consistency.
  • Build tools, workflows, and infrastructure that enable high-fidelity prototyping with real components, working code, and interactive states.
  • Explore and implement AI-powered tooling, MCP integrations, Figma plugins, automation, and design-to-code workflows.
  • Champion accessibility, visual quality, interaction quality, and consistency across Air.
  • Improve standards for component APIs, tokens, naming, documentation, versioning, and adoption in partnership with Design and Engineering.
  • Help product teams confidently adopt, extend, and contribute to the system with less dependency on centralized support.
