About The Position

The Design Release Engineer is part of General Motors’ Exterior Team and is responsible for designing, engineering, and releasing bumper, grille, fascia, and trim (BGFT) exterior subsystems. The role covers product engineering activities from requirements definition through design execution, validation, and testing, and includes leading or participating in cross-functional product development teams. The engineer collaborates with creative design, purchasing, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and other engineering and validation functions to deliver exterior components that meet program requirements and milestones. This hybrid position is based at the Warren Tech Center, where the selected candidate is expected to work on-site at least three days per week or at another frequency determined by the hiring leader. Travel is required for less than 25% of the role. The position is not eligible for relocation benefits, and GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship. The position also requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle regularly; use of a company vehicle is conditional on passing a Motor Vehicle Report review.

  • Budget management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, engineer, and release bumper, grille, fascia, and trim (BGFT) exterior subsystems.
  • Support or lead large cross-functional Product Development Teams for components and subsystems, working with suppliers, designers, engineers, validation, manufacturing, supplier quality, dimensional, CAE, and purchasing teams.
  • Complete in-house designs on time and with quality to meet program milestones and deliverables.
  • Design and package BGFT components and directed-buy components, including sensors, cameras, harnesses, and lamps.
  • Develop criteria and typical sections using Unigraphics math data, and collaborate with the studio on surface development that meets requirements.
  • Balance subsystem priorities such as cost, timing, mass, and warranty.
  • Conduct design studies and evaluate alternatives; present studies and business cases to the program team to support decision-making.
  • Support design and technical reviews to ensure design fidelity and implementation of best practices.
  • Develop Interface Control Document requirements for component and subsystem interfaces, and collaborate with peers on interfacing components.
  • Support BGFT launch efforts by working with assembly plants and cross-functional personnel to resolve issues quickly.
