About The Position

As a Product Engineer in the Seat Core Engineering team, you will be responsible for leading product development and core engineering/integration activities. You will utilize established engineering tools and processes to successfully develop seat variants for vehicle programs and effectively achieve program milestones through thorough and rigorous program management. This role is categorized as hybrid, meaning the selected candidate will be expected to work on-site at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week (or other frequency determined by their manager). This role is not eligible for relocation assistance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, or Civil Engineering
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience developing and executing technical solutions for mechanical components to support new vehicle programs
  • Previous seat development experience
  • Demonstrated ability to balance business imperatives, including cost, mass, complexity, and timing
  • Comfortable working with multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment with ambiguity and forward-looking requirements
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) – Green Belt certification
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) – Black Belt certification

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Engineering
  • Familiarity with structured problem-solving methods (e.g., Red-X)
  • Experience with DFMEA, PFMEA, and GD&T

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, analysis, implementation, and validation of complex seat subsystems
  • Perform engineering design evaluations and concept development across vehicle programs using a DFSS approach
  • Utilize engineering tools (DFMEA, ICDs, PFMEA) and leverage CAE groups, including Safety Performance, to develop robust system design solutions
  • Complete DFMEAs (FIT) on time and with high quality
  • Package components, manage CAD development through suppliers or GM designers, and collaborate with other vehicle systems
  • Ensure best practices are incorporated in CAD models and seek support when best practices are not met
  • Work cross-functionally to support initial vehicle configuration, cost optimization, customer-driven requirements, and product/process improvements
  • Balance key business imperatives, including cost, mass, complexity, timing, and content
  • Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations (e.g., Creative Design, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers) and lead the Product Development Team (PDT)
  • Track and help resolve open issues with appropriate support
  • Review, support, and apply benchmarking to ensure competitive design direction
  • Support SVI team objectives through early engagement
  • Understand customer needs and architecture limitations to guide design decisions
  • Integrate components, occupants, and seating systems into a cohesive solution
  • Anticipate future usage scenarios and avoid point solutions
  • Develop a reuse strategy across all seating systems
  • Reduce unnecessary component variants where feasible
  • Provide design improvements and solutions to enable comfort and craftsmanship
  • Deliver features and solutions that support consistent quality assembly and closeout (to the seat and vehicle)
  • Support virtual validation goals and activities
  • Incorporate lessons learned and continuous improvements from physical validation and builds
