About The Position

The Design / Project Engineer provides engineering and technical expertise for the development and improvement of new and existing products and processes, including troubleshooting. The role serves as a liaison among Engineering, Sales, Quality, and Operations, using customer input and sales information to design or redesign products, develop and test processes, and improve tooling and methods. The engineer also conducts metal-flow simulations to improve tooling and process designs. The position manages projects, new product introductions, and other product launches through the DIAMOND stage-gate process. It develops and improves products through activities such as prototype development and certification, material and labor costing, and production-method planning. The engineer supports continuous improvement through the SMART program and works with internal departments and external suppliers, designers, and technicians throughout product design and improvement. The role designs and simulates tooling and processes for producing forged parts that meet customer specifications. It uses design software to support Sales, creates forged-part designs from customer drawings or 3D models, revises drawings and models, develops preform shapes and forging operations, and runs finite element method simulations to validate tooling designs. The engineer also works with shop-floor associates to discuss and resolve design and manufacturing issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment; college graduates with relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Fundamentals of solid mechanics and materials science or metallurgy.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects and multiple concurrent priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid analytical skills, including defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Introductory experience with a 3D CAD package.
  • Familiarity with finite element modeling principles.
  • Experience with stress and strain, deformations, and thermal distributions.
  • Understanding of finite element pre-processing concepts, including boundary conditions and meshing.
  • Understanding of finite element processing concepts and post-processing, including interpreting model outcomes.
  • Knowledge of drawing and dimensioning standards, including ASME Y14.5-1994 and later.
  • Experience detailing and understanding tooling layouts and assemblies.
  • Comfort with heat transfer, including finite differences and deriving boundary conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Forging experience.
  • Experience with CATIA V5 or Creo (Pro-Engineer) CAD software.
  • 1,000 or more hours of machine time.
  • Experience with metal-flow simulation software such as DEFORM 2D/3D.

Responsibilities

  • Manage projects, new product introductions, and product launches using the DIAMOND stage-gate process.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement new product designs and product improvements, managing development through prototype development and certification, material and labor costing, and production-method planning.
  • Support the SMART program by defining and facilitating continuous improvement activities and applying Lean, Six Sigma, and root-cause analysis tools.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Supply Chain, Quality, Operations, and external suppliers, designers, and technicians throughout product design and improvement processes.
  • Design and simulate tooling and processes to produce finished forged parts that meet customer specifications.
  • Use design software and tools to provide technical information in support of Sales.
  • Design forged parts from customer machine drawings, forging-part drawings, or 3D models, and revise drawings and models in response to customer changes or internal needs.
  • Design preform shapes and the operations required to produce finished forged parts.
  • Set up and run finite element method simulations to validate that tooling designs will produce acceptable forgings.
  • Interface with shop-floor associates to discuss and resolve design and manufacturing issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
