About The Position

Turner Construction Company is seeking a full-time Design Manager for its Vancouver office. This role requires on-site availability or work from the head office, Monday to Friday, for 40 hours per week. The Design Manager will be responsible for leading the process to deliver efficient and economical designs that demonstrate value through the bid and construction phases, ensuring client scope and technical requirements are met.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited and credentialed degree program in Engineering or Architecture.
  • 10 years of experience in Engineering or Design Project Management, including the Construction Administration portion of Engineering and Design Management, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Extensive Designing, Estimating, and Scheduling experience.
  • Proven ability to interpret owner compliance documentation and lead design teams in developing efficient, compliant, and cost-competitive designs.
  • Ability to think in a highly structured manner across all design disciplines with creativity and collaboration to develop specialized solutions and anticipate potential challenges and opportunities.
  • Cross-functional knowledge of key engineering disciplines (Architectural, Structural, MEP/ HVAC, etc.) and relevant trades.
  • Must be integrative by involving Design Specialists and experts, consultancy, and support.
  • Ability to enjoy working in a professional interdisciplinary team environment while maintaining an independent and professional design view.
  • Leadership skills to lead large teams and achieve goals.
  • Travel is required based on business needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous industry experience as a Designer.
  • Experience working in collaborative contract models such as Design-Build, Modified/Progressive Design-Build, IPD, or Alliance is preferred.
  • Experience with collaborative contracts and alternative delivery methods is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Determine the fundamental direction of design and continuously lead the entire design team and design process from schematic design through execution until completion.
  • Lead design meetings in pursuit and execution stages from concept to completion of construction documents.
  • Act as an integral part of the construction team, working closely with the Project Executive/Manager and performing a decisive leadership role.
  • Establish appropriate scopes and contractual agreements between Designers necessary to deliver the project.
  • Communicate effectively between Designers, the Construction team, and client representatives.
  • Thoroughly review and approve all construction and shop drawings generated by design partners and subcontractors to ensure the design in all phases meets contractual obligations.
  • Manage the timely delivery of all design documents.
  • Generate and coordinate relevant subcontractor contractual language relating to design.
  • Initiate design reviews and leverage opportunities to optimize design, improve constructability, and detect risks.
  • Understand and utilize lean aspects to minimize costs and speed up the delivery of design preparation; strive to create designs that are delivered more efficiently (prefabrication and other lean techniques), more safely (safety in design), and balance first costs with life cycle costs.
