About The Position

Brown and Caldwell (BC), a national environmental engineering and consulting firm, has an exciting Design Manager opportunity to lead our private sector design project delivery for our industrial water and wastewater clients nationwide. The Design Management role will focus on planning and executing design projects. The role will work closely with project managers to develop design scope, project timelines, track progress, and ensure that project milestones are met. The role will conduct project performance analysis, identify trends, and provide insights to project managers. The role will also collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and address project risks and issues. Project opportunities will vary in size and complexity and will require the implementation of water and wastewater treatment process solutions specific to several industries including technology, power, oil and gas, mining, food and beverage and manufacturing. In this role, the ideal candidate will manage the overall execution of assigned design projects, lead the delivery team members, and coordinate with our enterprise Design Services disciplines to augment private sector design delivery bench strength. This role will collaborate with the Private Sector Portfolio Design Manager (PDM), Portfolio Design Leads (PDLs), and Chief Engineer to lead the execution of best delivery practices and recommended design delivery approaches for our industrial clients. Remote work from within the United States is allowed.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of professional or relevant experience, with 2 to 3 years of experience required in design management.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or architecture or related professional experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional engineering license or a pathway to obtain it within 2 years of employment with BC.
  • 7+ years in detailed engineering design; with 3+ years of Design Management experience on multi-disciplinary design projects.
  • Hands-on understanding of multidisciplinary design.
  • Experience working on private sector water, wastewater or infrastructure design.
  • Experience in detail process mechanical design for water and wastewater treatment processes including, but not limited to membrane filtration, aerobic/anaerobic biological systems, biosolids handling, chemical precipitation, liquid storage and pumping systems.
  • Decisiveness (the ability to take input and make a decision in a timely manner).
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills (comfort dealing directly with clients).

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership within the team.
  • Lead the design process and ensure high-quality outputs.
  • Coordinate design teams to support project goals.
  • Assist the Project Manager (PM) in the development and implementation of design scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Manage design resources to ensure efficient utilization.
  • Coordinate the creation, submission, and revision of design deliverables to meet project demands.
  • Help oversee design quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) management.
  • Manage design deliverables in line with project requirements.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
  • May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.
