About The Position

ABRAMS is seeking a Design Intern to join their Comic Arts Design Team for the Fall 2026 Internship Program. This is an unpaid program offered for academic credit only, designed to provide interns with meaningful insight into the book publishing industry. Interns will contribute to real projects, learn from experienced professionals, develop practical skills, and broaden their understanding of publishing. ABRAMS publishes a wide range of books across various categories and distributes titles for other publishers. The Design Intern will support the Abrams Comic Arts Design team with design implementation and departmental workflow, potentially working on graphic novels, manga, illustrated pop culture books, and young adult titles.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited academic institution.
  • This internship is not open to recent graduates.
  • Currently enrolled in a college program with a focus/major in graphic design or illustration
  • Interest in Comics, Graphic Novels, and Manga
  • Experience using the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Must be detail-oriented and able to work efficiently in a deadline-driven environment
  • Proactive with strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Motivated to learn, grow, research, solve problems, and work closely with the design staff.
  • A portfolio is required to be considered for this role. Applications submitted without a portfolio will not be reviewed.

Responsibilities

  • Set up design mechanicals based on templates
  • Follow process documents to prepare files for lettering and typesetting
  • Make text and design corrections to cover mechanicals and interior passes
  • Assist with shipping and scanning artwork
  • Attend and contribute to cover review meetings
  • Help create ancillary materials for use by sales, marketing, and editorial, working with the digital asset management system
  • Adapt foreign-language editions for the US market, such as choosing fonts, revising cover designs, reformatting InDesign files
  • Learning and networking with ABRAMS employees, publishing professionals, and fellow interns during this internship experience for academic credit
  • Gaining hands-on exposure to the publishing industry, from concept to finished product
  • Supporting research, project work, and day-to-day tasks within your assigned department
  • Contributing ideas and providing creative input on department projects
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams and learning about various areas of the publishing business
  • Participating in workshops and discussions designed to deepen your understanding of publishing trends and processes
  • Receiving coaching, mentorship, and feedback from experienced ABRAMS professionals
