About The Position

A Design Estimator at Ironsmith Fire plays a critical role in supporting the development of accurate and detailed fire protection estimates. This position is responsible for reviewing project plans and specifications, determining project scope requirements, assisting with preliminary design concepts, and developing competitive, code-compliant estimates for service, remodel, tenant finish, retrofit, and new construction projects.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive understanding of fire protection systems, building codes, local regulations, and industry standards.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Aptitude for identifying and resolving issues that may arise during estimating and preconstruction activities.
  • Technologically proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, estimating software, and CRM systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and results-driven mindset.
  • Preferred experience in fire sprinkler estimating, design, or related fire protection/preconstruction functions.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the fire protection industry and applicable regulations.
  • Experience reviewing construction drawings, specifications, and fire protection system requirements.

  • Professional certifications related to fire protection, such as NICET Certification, are advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Review bid documents, plans, specifications, addenda, and scope requirements to determine complete project needs and ensure full scope coverage.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs, material counts, and preliminary layout/design review of site fire protection plans and overhead sprinkler systems from construction drawings and specifications.
  • Confirm design criteria of sprinkler systems, including hazard classification, density requirements, and system type; perform hydraulic analysis as necessary to support estimating and system feasibility.
  • Review local municipality and AHJ requirements, including permit fees, submittal processes, and special ordinances.
  • Request and track RFIs (Requests for Information) to clarify scope gaps, conflicts, code requirements, and specification discrepancies.
  • Identify special pricing requirements and coordinate vendor/manufacturer quotes for material, equipment, fabrication, and specialty items.
  • Coordinate job-site visits, field verification, and flow tests when required for accurate estimating and design development.
  • Analyze field conditions and existing system requirements to support estimate accuracy and code compliance.
  • Develop detailed, competitive, and code-compliant project proposals.
  • Coordinate with sales, project management, design teams, and internal operations to support pricing strategies, scope development, value engineering, and alternate pricing options.
  • Review applicable NFPA standards, local code requirements, and project specifications during estimate preparation.
  • Maintain organized estimate files, bid documentation, proposal records, and correspondence.
  • Support bid turnover meetings to ensure smooth transition from estimating to operations and project execution.
  • Monitor bid deadlines and ensure proposals are completed and submitted timely.
  • When estimating workload is limited, perform QA/QC review of fire sprinkler design drawings, hydraulic calculations, and stocklists for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
  • Review stocklists and material summaries to identify discrepancies, omissions, or potential cost-saving opportunities.
  • Assist with maintaining estimating databases, labor units, and material pricing updates.
  • Identify potential project execution risks, including supply chain issues or installation challenges.
  • Stay informed on industry trends, market developments, code changes, and fire protection system advancements.
  • Promote a team-oriented environment focused on accuracy, accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence.
