About The Position

The Design Engineer is an entry-level role in which the associate works under close supervision while learning and assisting with engineering design aspects of projects. After training, the associate is responsible for design projects and may check the work of others. The role designs precast concrete parking deck, building, and wall products and associated connections, and works with project management, production, and drafting teams. The position reports to the Engineering Manager and receives guidance and assignments primarily from the Engineering Manager and Structural Engineers. The position typically works in an office environment, with significant exposure to the production environment during the initial training period. The normal schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; hours may vary while training in production areas. Personal protective equipment is required when working in the plant.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
0–3 years of relevant engineering experience.
Strong communication skills.
Analytical thinking and above-average problem-solving ability.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Strong personal organization skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects, maintain project schedules, and work effectively within a project team.
Ability to work individually or as part of a team.
Dependability, a strong work ethic, self-motivation, and eagerness to learn.

Nice To Haves

Structural emphasis in Civil Engineering education.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification.
Experience with engineering design software.

Responsibilities

Design parking deck, building, and wall products and associated connections.
Design lateral systems with assistance.
Independently manage engineering design aspects of projects with minimal assistance or guidance once trained.
Review contract documents to become familiar with project requirements.
Attend project meetings as directed and may lead coordination meetings.
Write requests for information (RFIs), as needed.
Answer questions from drafting subcontractors with assistance.
Resolve engineering design issues independently, except for lateral systems.
Assist others with resolving engineering design issues, except for lateral systems.
Check others’ engineering design calculations and details for accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to Metromont standards and the Engineering Design Process, except for lateral systems.
Review erection drawings, master shop tickets, and additional shop tickets to ensure designs and standards are followed.
Complete repairs with assistance.
Follow Metromont and OSHA safety rules and regulations.
Document ongoing project information for record-keeping purposes.
