About The Position

Welch Fluorocarbon, a UFP Technologies company, has specialized in providing thermoformed and heat-sealed products since 1985, utilizing high-performance films. This Design Engineer role focuses on the end-to-end design, prototyping, and validation of new products and automated manufacturing processes. The position involves independently managing development projects, optimizing existing products using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, and developing CMM inspection programs to meet strict quality standards.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering (or Engineering Technology) field (Mechanical engineering preferred).
At least 1 year of demonstrated engineering experience.
Some knowledge of plastic part fabrication techniques (common forming/sealing methods & equipment), thermoforming is particularly valuable.
Knowledge of machine design, simple electrical design, and understanding of common manufacturing practices.
Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. with the ability to learn new ones.
Advanced skills in 3D CAD software.
Proficient working knowledge of drawing standards (geometric tolerancing, etc.).

Nice To Haves

Six Sigma Green Belt certification or higher preferred.
Knowledge of CMM programming software and interface preferred.
Experience with CNC machining and/or manual machining desired but not required.

Responsibilities

Work with Welch Teams and customers to conceive, design, and develop new products and processes through engineering analysis, prototyping, risk assessment, and qualification testing.
Manage smaller development projects with minimal direction, considering all technical aspects for commercial success.
Evaluate, document, and implement design or process changes to improve performance, quality, manufacturability, safety, and/or cost of existing products/processes.
Design and verify tools, gauges, and equipment needed for new products or customer product programs.
Manufacture and verify initial part prototypes.
Support qualification processes with Project and Manufacturing Engineering Teams, leading to release to manufacturing.
Design and lead experiments to confirm/uncover or resolve design questions.
Assemble, test, and troubleshoot automated production equipment.
Create manufacturing documentation for new products and processes.
Implement LEAN and Six Sigma continuous improvement best practices.
Inspect tooling, gauges, and developmental customer parts for dimensional accuracy using handheld instruments, vision systems, and laser scanning CMM.
Develop CMM programs based on part geometry, GD&T, and functional requirements to inspect and document inspection results, programming changes, and quality assurance data.
Perform other miscellaneous tasks as assigned by the Engineering Manager.
