Design Engineer II

Clark Material Handling•Lexington, KY

About The Position

The Design Engineer II joins a project team overseeing the design and development of new products and the redesign of existing products. The role performs engineering work to create or revise products in accordance with quality, production, and customer standards, and organizes and executes tasks associated with implementing product designs. The engineer gathers and interprets product and design information—including customer feedback, existing designs, warranty reports, and testing results—to identify design criteria. The role coordinates with internal departments and external parties, including marketing, manufacturing, vendors, purchasers, customers, and other engineers. It creates and develops product designs using the NX design drafting system, performs engineering calculations and design analyses, conducts and oversees quality checks and testing, and helps investigate and resolve product-design problems. The position also supports prototype assembly and testing, communicates designs and changes through recommendations and presentations, and contributes to quality-improvement teams. It requires maintaining technical knowledge of products, customer needs, and competitor products; applying relevant industry standards; checking the accuracy and completeness of work; and collaborating with colleagues and teams domestically and internationally. Travel to other facilities or locations may be required to attend meetings and examine truck operation. The position requires the ability to work in the United States indefinitely without sponsorship.

  • Gather product and design data from sources such as customer comments and complaints, existing designs, warranty reports, and performance and endurance testing; interpret the data to establish design criteria.
  • Coordinate design and product work with internal departments and external groups, including marketing, manufacturing, vendors, purchasers, customers, and other engineers.
  • Perform and oversee quality checks to ensure trucks meet specifications.
  • Conduct testing procedures, analyze results, and take corrective action when needed.
  • Create and develop new or revised product designs using the NX design drafting system, including layouts and detail drawings as required.
  • Perform basic and complex mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic engineering calculations and analyze design attributes such as strength, loads, forces, stress, tolerances, fluid pressure, and flow rates.
  • Answer product and product-design questions and communicate designs and changes through recommendations, proposals, and presentations.
  • Conduct and oversee the assembly, building, ordering, installation, and testing of prototype parts.
  • Oversee and perform testing to ensure tests are conducted as needed.

  • Understand and apply standards including UL, NFPA, ANSI, ISO, and ITA.
  • Implement, direct, and assist quality-improvement teams focused on manufacturing processes, efficiency, product quality, cost, and customer relations; present and report team findings.
  • Travel to facilities or other locations for meetings and to examine truck operation.
  • Investigate product-design problems, which may involve observing truck operation on site, disassembling and inspecting parts, and analyzing truck parts and components.
  • Assemble prototypes of trucks or truck components.
  • Share information and answer questions concerning planning, design, alterations, and production.
  • Participate in team activities, meetings, teleconferences, and other functions, including transferring information, improving working relationships, and contributing to team success.
