About The Position

Under direct supervision, this role designs, develops, or redesigns new or existing products. The Design Engineer 1 works from requirements or instructions to develop and design new components or redesign existing components to improve the organization's products. This role also completes reverse engineering activities as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical or other engineering or related field
  • 0-3 years of related experience
  • Competent written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills
  • Competent customer service skills with an ability to approach every business relationship as a partnership
  • Competent problem solving skills with an ability to address customer issues and partner on resolutions
  • Basic analytical skills
  • Competent negotiation skills and an ability to resolve situations while making a point firmly and seeking a positive outcome for both sides
  • Basic understanding and competency in working with computer software and mainframe applications to manipulate, analyze and reconcile data
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and other engineering software and databases
  • Ability to create, read and modify product prints
  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • General knowledge of welding, plating, die-casting, injection molding, stamping/cold forming, heat treatment process, fastener torque and other related skills

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes computer-aided engineering tools to create, change, and issue component, system, and assembly drawings under the supervision of more experienced engineers.
  • Reviews customer’s requirements and specifications for product(s) and identifies issues and changes, where appropriate. Converts customer technical requirements to detailed product requirements.
  • Conducts design analysis on components and/or assemblies to assist in the development process by ensuring designs are cost efficient, manufacturable, and reliable. Selects and tests materials, ingredients, or components that will be suitable for the product. Develops innovative ways to increase the recycling of materials and decrease the carbon footprint of manufactured products as designed.
  • Oversees the assembly and testing of engineering prototypes as needed. Documents, reviews, and approves information obtained from product testing. Perfects engineering designs based upon testing results.
  • Analyzes the results of customer warranty, manufacturing, and validation test failures to redesign current products to improve performance.
  • Assists with creating test and technical reports. May deliver simple or routine presentations.
  • Analyzes current processes, procedures, and systems and makes recommendations for improvement for own job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
