About The Position

We are seeking a Design Director to lead graphic design across Splendid’s marketing channels and art direct campaign photography and video, turning approved brand and seasonal concepts into design systems, marketing assets, and imagery that engage customers and support sales. This hands-on leadership role has two core responsibilities: leading graphic design across all channels and art directing campaign shoots. Reporting to the Sr. Brand Director, this person will elevate Splendid’s visual identity, mentor the in-house Senior Graphic Designer and seasonal freelance support, and ensure that design and imagery work together to tell a consistent brand story. The right candidate combines exceptional design craft with confident on-set direction, moving comfortably between everyday marketing needs, seasonal design systems, and shoots of varying scale. This role requires a creative leader who can translate brand strategy into clear, actionable design and photography direction, balance brand storytelling with marketing performance and customer experience, lead through hands-on execution, thoughtful feedback, and mentorship, and maintain high creative standards while managing fast-paced timelines.

Requirements

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while remaining hands-on in a fast-paced retail environment, bringing a positive, proactive attitude and a practical approach to solving challenges.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience spanning graphic design and photoshoot art direction, preferably within an in-house fashion, retail, or lifestyle brand.
  • At least 3+ years of leadership experience.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating brand systems, integrated campaigns, digital and print design, and fashion or lifestyle shoot art direction.
  • Proven experience managing and mentoring designers and freelance creative partners.
  • Exceptional typography, layout, composition, and visual storytelling skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Working knowledge of motion and video workflows; familiarity with Premiere and/or After Effects is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct photography and video in studio and on location, including preproduction, on-set direction, and postproduction review.
  • Experience leading productions of varying budgets and crew sizes.
  • Strong understanding of e-commerce UI/UX, digital accessibility best practices, and creative testing.
  • Ability to recognize when work falls below the creative standard and provide specific, constructive feedback that improves the outcome.
  • Strong systems thinking and a practical approach to simplifying production-heavy workflows.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, organization, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to travel for location scouting and shoots as needed, primarily within the Los Angeles area, with occasional travel farther afield.

Responsibilities

  • Lead graphic design across email, ecommerce, direct mail, retail signage, packaging, wholesale materials, and presentation decks.
  • Develop and execute evergreen and seasonal design guidelines, along with creative toolkits for collaborations and special collections.
  • Manage and mentor the in-house Senior Graphic Designer, junior team members, and seasonal freelance support, providing clear briefs, constructive feedback, and thoughtful prioritization.
  • Remain hands-on in design development and execution, setting a high standard for typography, layout, imagery, and visual storytelling, while applying channel best practices to ensure assets are legible, communicate clear marketing messages, and guide customers to action.
  • Review and approve design deliverables for brand consistency, creative quality, production accuracy, and alignment with business objectives.
  • Partner with ecommerce on website testing and UI/UX improvements that create an elevated, intuitive shopping experience, applying accessibility best practices to support ADA compliance.
  • Streamline design workflows, templates, and review processes to improve efficiency while maintaining creative quality.
  • Support the Sr. Brand Director on special projects that advance brand evolution, strengthen Splendid’s visual identity, and bring new brand initiatives to life.
  • Stay current on modern consumer brands, design, culture, technology, and AI tools, testing approaches that strengthen creative output and processes.
  • Lead photo and video art direction for studio and location shoots from concept through final delivery, translating approved brand and seasonal direction into fashion and lifestyle imagery.
  • Provide clear on-set guidance to crew members (photographers, videographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, and talent).
  • Execute approved garment styling direction on set, guiding outfit combinations, fit, proportions, accessories, and finishing details to create distinctly California looks that feel easy, relaxed, and elevated, with a feminine sensibility and effortless cool.
  • Provide hands-on soft goods styling for product lifestyle flats as needed, arranging garments and textiles to highlight silhouette, texture, softness, and product details.
  • Lead both small, resourceful shoots and larger productions with crews ranging from approximately 4–25 people, adapting the approach to the budget, timeline, and creative goals.
  • Develop mood boards and shoot treatments that define photography, styling, casting, locations, set design, and hair and makeup direction.
  • Partner with and mentor the Sr. Creative Content Strategist on shoot concepts, visuals, and content tailored to channel-specific needs; collaborate with the Creative Producer on preproduction planning, budget planning and crew selection.
  • Oversee image selects, provide direction for retouching and color correction to ensure final assets meet brand standards and reflect the intended creative direction.
