About The Position

The Indianapolis Zoo is seeking a Deserts Keeper of Reptiles & Amphibians to join their team. This role is for a practiced animal care professional with experience in maintaining and caring for a variety of amphibians and reptiles, and developing and implementing enrichment activities. The ideal candidate is committed to the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. Prior experience in an animal care profession, preferably a zoological setting, is required. Prior experience working with venomous and non-venomous snakes, crocodilians, and desert reptiles is highly desirable. The successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills, a professional demeanor and appearance due to regular visitor contact, seasonal keeper chats, and media events. A vital role of this position is to participate in animal programming and interacting with guests on a regular basis.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year related work experience
  • Prior experience working with venomous and non-venomous snakes and/or crocodilians is highly desired
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university in Life Sciences, Zoology or a related field is required
  • Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions and temperatures
  • Ability to transport and move items, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently
  • Ability to ascend/descend ladders, steps, and uneven terrain, while maintaining body equilibrium to perform various jobs
  • Ability to detect, assess, identify, and observe surroundings to make sound judgments
  • Ability to communicate verbally, and comprehend and decipher information accurately using a two-way radio and telephone
  • Valid driver's license and driving record that is insurable by our carrier
  • Team-oriented personality temperamentally suited to work with animals
  • Strong observational and communicative (both verbal and written) skills
