About The Position

The purpose of this job is to serve as second-in-command and supervise the safety and well being for the offenders at the Clarke County Correctional Institution. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing direction, supervising staff, scheduling security personnel, maintaining inventories, insuring correct utilization of offender labor and performing additional tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement or related field required
  • Four years of law enforcement, corrections or related experience required
  • Three years of supervisory experience is required
  • Ability to meet current certification requirements set forth in the Georgia Basic Correctional Officer Training program and obtain BCOT Certification in Corrections within six months of hire date
  • This position requires bonding
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including typewriter, adding machine, copier, camera, revolver and hand guns.
  • Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.
  • Requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.

  • Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities.

  • Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Must be able to communicate via telephone, two-way radio.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and evaluates assigned staff; handling all employee concerns, directing work assignments, counseling and disciplining employees when necessary, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of the correctional facility; provides for the safe, legal and humane custody and care of offenders; provides for the safety of correctional facility personnel.
  • Provides for the security and management of offenders workers.
  • Disciplines staff and offenders; chairs the disciplinary committee.
  • Maintains compliance of contraband, key and tool control; maintains files, logs and records.
  • Picks up inmates from Georgia Diagnostic Center and other unified government jails, as necessary.
  • Fills in for the Correctional Supervisor, as required.
  • Assumes the duties of Warden, as required.
  • Tracks, captures and returns any escapees.
  • Ensures cleanliness of sleeping areas.
  • Oversees the operation of the prison laundry.
  • Reviews offender activities for adherence to rules.
  • Provides information to news media, as needed.
  • Serves as duty officer on call 24 hours a day.
  • Monitors offender security and classification system for compliance with Georgia Department of Corrections standards.
  • Conducts periodic inspections of offender work crews for compliance with work standards.
  • Purchases supplies and materials.
  • Photographs, fingerprints, in-processes and out-processes offenders.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
