About The Position

Positions in this job are responsible for the administration, direction, and management of the operational and administrative functions and activities for a correctional facility for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. At this level incumbents serve as Warden for a small sized correctional facility with the responsibility of performing all required all duties and functions at the full-performance level or perform various managerial and administrative duties as Deputy Warden, serve as the operating and/or administrative officer of the facility, and assume the duties of the facility’s Warden in their absence, or as directed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of administration and management.
  • Knowledge of public relations methods.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws concerning the incarceration of felons.
  • Skill in information technology.
  • Skill in applying problem-solving techniques and strategies to complex issues.
  • Skill in coordinating and conducting investigations.
  • Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the activities of others.
  • Ability to manage the operations of a facility.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to organize and manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to analyze complex and security sensitive situations and adopt an appropriate course of action.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional level work experience in corrections for a government or private corrections agency or an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the completion of thirty (30) semester hours from an accredited college or university for each year of experience.
  • Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and retain a valid driver’s license while assigned to this job.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for secondary accountability of the operational and/or administrative aspects of a correctional facility, which may include, but is not limited to, security and custodial care, classification, food service, health services, physical plant maintenance, inmate programmatic activities, religious activities, education, laundry, mail, canteen, correctional industries, and agri-services.
  • Develops and administers the facility’s budget, staff, physical resources, and other administrative functions in accordance with state and federal statutes, rules, policies, and guidelines.
  • Serves as the primary assistant to the Warden in managing the facility budget, staff, and other resources.
  • Provides guidance and information as approved by the Warden relating to the interpretation and application of laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to operations of a correctional institution.
  • Assists the warden in developing, implementing, and applying department policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory agencies.
  • Provides oversight to contract service providers as appropriate.
  • Serves on special project committees on various department-related operational activities.
  • Serves as a public relations contact for the facility as required.
