About The Position

The Lansing School District serves over 10,000 PreK-12 students across 25 school buildings in the increasingly diverse urban community of Lansing, MI. In Pursuit of this mission, we are looking to hire an Deputy Superintendent of Schools. The Deputy Superintendent of Schools is a senior executive leadership position that reports directly to the Superintendent and serves as a key member of the District’s Executive Team. This position provides strategic leadership, supervision, coordination, and accountability across major district functions, including K-12 schools, curriculum and instruction, assessment and evaluation, professional development, pupil accounting and enrollment, alternative education, athletics and enrichment, online learning, summer school, and district instructional and steering committees. The Deputy Superintendent works closely with the Superintendent, Executive Team, central office leaders, building administrators, staff, families, community partners, and the Board of Education to advance district priorities, strengthen academic systems, ensure consistency across schools and departments, and support excellent outcomes for all students.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, Administration, or a related field required
  • Valid Michigan School Administrator Certificate or eligibility required
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful school lor educational leadership experience required
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, coaching, evaluating, and supporting school leaders and/or district-level administrators
  • Strong understanding of K-12 instructional systems, assessment practices, accountability, school improvement, student support, and district operations
  • Experience leading teams, managing complex initiatives, and implementing systems across multiple schools or departments
  • Demonstrated ability to use data to monitor progress, identify needs, evaluate impact, and guide improvement
  • Strong communication, facilitation, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to build trust, work collaboratively, and lead through influence with diverse stakeholders
  • Commitment to student achievement, and the success of all Lansing School District students

Nice To Haves

  • Central office leadership experience in a large urban school district preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior advisor to the Superintendent and member of the District Executive Team
  • Supervise, support, and evaluate assigned senior directors, directors, administrators, and other staff as designated by the Superintendent
  • Lead and coordinate districtwide work related to curriculum and instruction, assessment and evaluation, instructional programming, professional development, and continuous improvement
  • Support the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of district academic priorities and strategic initiatives
  • Collaborate with school and central office leaders to strengthen instructional systems, school improvement processes, student achievement, attendance, graduation, and overall school performance
  • Provide leadership for the alignment of academic programs, student supports, staffing, resources, and operational systems across schools and departments
  • Support principal supervision, principal development, and consistent implementation of district expectations across buildings
  • Lead or support Instructional Council, steering committees, and other districtwide leadership structures
  • Oversee assigned areas such as K-12 schools, alternative education, athletics and enrichment, Capital Area K-12 Online, summer school, pupil accounting, central enrollment, research requests, and related district functions
  • Use district, school, program, and student data to monitor progress, evaluate effectiveness, identify gaps, and recommend adjustments
  • Collaborate with Executive Team members to support budgeting, staffing, resource allocation, compliance, policy implementation, collective bargaining and labor relations, and short/long-range planning
  • Support the Superintendent in preparing recommendations, reports, presentations, and updates for the Board of Education, staff, families, and community stakeholders
  • Represent the Superintendent and/or District in meetings, committees, community events, and partnerships as assigned
  • Assist with crisis response, problem-solving, parent/community concerns, and high-level operational or instructional issues
  • Promote a culture of high expectations, accountability, collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement
  • Ensure assigned departments and schools operate in alignment with Board policy, state and federal requirements, grant requirements, collective bargaining agreements, and district procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment in handling sensitive personnel, student, family, and district matters
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent
