About The Position

The Portage County Sheriff's Office is opening a 6-month eligibility list for a Deputy Sheriff to fill current and future vacancies. This role is responsible for enforcing Federal and State laws and ordinances to maintain public peace, protect property, prevent crime, and arrest violators. It is a law enforcement position with arrest powers, with work reviewed by a supervisor through conferences, reports, and performance reviews.

Requirements

  • Eligible in 2026 for certification by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board
  • High School Diploma
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Of good moral character
  • No felony convictions unless pardoned by Governor
  • No domestic abuse convictions
  • Must hold a valid Wisconsin driver's license with a good driving record
  • Must satisfactorily complete all required training during the time period established by the department
  • Ability to possess a firearm
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and clear and concise speech
  • React quickly and effectively to stressful situations
  • Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment
  • Vision correctable to 20/20
  • Must successfully complete a written examination
  • Must successfully complete an oral interview
  • Must successfully complete a background criminal investigation

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a law enforcement officer is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Patrols county highways to enforce traffic laws, issues citations and summons, and investigates traffic accidents.
  • Completes written reports on all traffic law enforcement activities and testifies in court.
  • Utilizes equipment like radar and breath alcohol measuring devices for traffic law enforcement.
  • Responds to criminal complaints and investigates criminal activities such as homicide, robbery, sexual assaults, burglaries, and thefts.
  • Completes and types written reports upon completion of investigations.
  • Gathers evidence, interviews victims, suspects, and witnesses, and provides security, reassurance, and safety to victims and witnesses.
  • Presents testimony and evidence to the courts in criminal proceedings and protects crime scenes.
  • Recognizes and requests appropriate assistance and resources as needed.
  • Supervises inmates in the County Jail.
  • Transports prisoners to and from correctional facilities, county and circuit courts, and other locations.
  • Maintains jail security and provides for the welfare of inmates, including medical and mental health attention.
  • Transports mentally incompetent individuals to and from mental health facilities and courts.
  • Receives calls for assistance and dispatches necessary agencies, manpower, or equipment.
  • Serves civil and criminal process and assists the Sheriff in replevins, writs, and executions.
  • Maintains a record of all activities and submits them to the supervisor.
  • Responds to disturbances and altercations and investigates as appropriate.
  • Assists in security and crowd control at events as directed.
  • Coordinates emergency responses and personnel, including fire department, wrecker services, and ambulance needs.
  • Responds to public inquiries and complaints.
  • Conducts Community Policing activities, including checking building security and maintaining public contact.
