About The Position

The purpose of this position is to provide security for the occupants and public visitors of the Rockwall County Courthouse and Rockwall County Library. This is accomplished by patrolling the courthouse, library and the exterior grounds; visually screening each person as they enter the buildings; searching baggage and persons with an x-ray machine and metal detectors.

Requirements

  • At least 21 years old
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Basic Peace Officer's Certificate through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  • No worse than 20/100 vision rating in each eye, correctable to 20/20 in both eyes. The Rockwall County Sheriff's Office uses the Department of Transportation standard vision test. The exam includes moving your eyes left to right, up and down and able to see three different colors: red, yellow and green (just like a stop light).
  • Must have normal hearing and normal color vision, with or without correction.
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver's License.
  • Applicant must successfully pass the Rockwall County Sheriff's Office background investigation.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and in emergency situations as needed.
  • Must obtain TCOLE Courthouse Security Officer Certification within 90 days of appointment as a Courthouse Security Deputy.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must successfully pass psychological evaluation.
  • Must successfully pass physical evaluation.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Screens persons and property at all points of courthouse entry; monitors people entering the courthouse along with the possessions of those entering the courthouse; involves visual inspection , x-ray of property, electronic detection of metal on people; engages courthouse customers in conversation (providing additional level of contraband detection); provides directions to officers; directs people to building exit.
  • Conducts periodic foot patrol of all five levels of the courthouse along with both levels of the library and the surrounding parking lot.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures of the courthouse by physically walking all levels of the courthouse conducting a visual inspection; reports any maintenance issues discovered; moves patrol vehicles into sally port at closing.
  • Maintains security checkpoint screening equipment by ensuring it is used properly and calibrated throughout the work day.
  • Completes reports, time sheets, required documentation and reviews videos in an organized, timely manner.
  • Enforces all misdemeanor and felony laws of the State of Texas; apprehends, arrests and detains criminal suspects and violators of laws when necessary.
  • Collects evidence on the scene and processes evidence according to departmental protocol; serves as witness in court; provides evidence and testifies accordingly.
  • Responds to and assists all other law enforcement agencies in the County when requested.
  • Maintains weapons, vehicle and equipment in functional and presentable condition.
  • Generates reports, records and logs related to courthouse activity.
  • Escorts customers from the building to the parking lot as needed.
  • Generates and inventories security pass cards for county employees and bail bondsmen; distributes and maintains inventory of all keys for courthouse.
  • Maintains required level of proficiency in the use of firearm and evasive action/driving skills.
  • Works under stressful, high risk conditions often alone or with little to no immediate back-up from other officers.
  • Maintains continuing education hours prescribed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
  • Provides security at the Commissioner's court and consortium meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
