About The Position

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is seeking qualified candidates for the Deputy Recruit - Certified position. This role is essential for providing public safety and essential services to the Pikes Peak Region. Upon successful completion of the POST Academy, Deputies will be assigned to the Detention Security Division at the Criminal Justice Center. This is an in-person position with no remote work eligibility and is subject to recall based on the needs of the Office. The position is part of the Deputy Sheriff career progression series.

Requirements

Successful completion of the EPSO POST Certified Academy required.
El Paso County Sheriff's Office will provide P.O.S.T certification course.
Must be at least 21 years of age at time of graduation.
Successful completion of the Detentions Training Officer (DTO) Program required.
Successful completion of the Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.
Must be honest, truthful, trustworthy, and possess a high degree of personal and professional integrity.
Knowledge of federal and state laws and statutes concerning inmate rights and local regulations, ordinances, and laws concerning areas of responsibility, as well as knowledge of El Paso County Policies and Procedures.
Must possess good judgment and common sense to make competent decisions, as well as prioritize duties under stressful conditions.
Good observation skills and ability to work with the criminal population.
Ability to affect forceful arrest and control the person being taken into custody.
Ability to qualify with assigned weapon system in a safe manner in compliance with policy and procedure.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the position by maintaining physical condition and fitness.
Ability to exert 175 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently to carry, push, pull, or move objects.
Ability to climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, feel, finger, talk, smell, hear, possess normal color vision, and see (20/20 correctable, depth perception, and near and far acuity).
Must be able to use and determine the appropriate use of physical and deadly force when required.
Ability to learn and utilize jail management system software.
Ability to hear and speak clearly on a police radio.
Ability to write and type clear, concise, and complete reports.
Ability to communicate with the public, staff, and other agencies in a professional and courteous manner.
Ability to use office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, fax machine, and copier.
Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
High school diploma or equivalent education.
Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License.
Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification upon successful completion of the EPSO POST Certified Academy.
Ability to obtain Colorado POST Law Enforcement Certification upon successful completion of the EPSO Post Academy.
Must obtain and maintain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) Compliance within six months of employment.
Must pass background investigation, truth verification examination, motor vehicle record check, Tuberculosis testing, drug screen, physical examination, and psychological evaluation.
Color vision testing is required.

Responsibilities

Attend and successfully complete the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Certified Academy.
Perform duties and responsibilities associated with POST and policy-driven mandates, including Arrest Control, Driving, Firearms, Physical Fitness, and classroom instruction.
Ensure the care, custody, and control of inmates and staff at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center (CJC).
Resolve and control inmate crises through prevention, intervention, and observation.
Provide counseling, guidance, and direction to inmates.
Enforce federal laws, state laws, and county ordinances and codes.
Patrol an assigned district.
Enforce applicable civil statutes, answer service calls, conduct criminal investigations, issue summons and complaints, file cases with the District Attorney's Office, and testify in court.
Perform duties and responsibilities associated with policy-driven mandates including Arrest Control, Firearms, Physical Fitness, and Classroom Instruction.
Pass written and practical exams to demonstrate comprehension and skills.
Provide accurate and timely feedback to instructors and training staff.
Perform first-line supervision over inmates.
Maintain care, custody, control, and strict accountability of inmates.
Conduct timely security and welfare checks of inmates and areas of responsibility.
Prepare detailed incident reports, ward logs, property supplements, inter-office memorandums, and other forms.
Respond to inmate questions and provide information on the judicial process, facility rules, and referrals to social agencies.
Inspect physical areas within responsibility and report safety, security, sanitation, fire, or maintenance deficiencies.
Communicate with the central control room and other offices via two-way radio and telephone.
Conduct inventories of assigned equipment and supplies and inspect for signs of tampering.
Supervise the cleaning of assigned areas.
Perform searches of inmates' person, possessions, and quarters.
Monitor inmates' visits with attorneys, bondsmen, and other persons.
Escort inmates throughout the facility.
Collect and distribute all correspondence from and to assigned inmates.
Supervise the issuance of inmate meals and eating utensils, and account for utensils.
Supervise the issuance and exchange of inmate linen and laundry.
Answer service calls for an assigned district and take appropriate enforcement action or conduct follow-up investigation.
Patrol the County to detect illegal activities.
Assist citizens involved in traffic accidents.
Ensure the safety and security of citizens by making arrests, quieting disturbances, and using physical and/or deadly force as required.
Pursue fleeing suspects or prisoners on foot or by vehicle; climb, crawl, jump, and run to pursue suspects and protect life.
Push/pull, lift, or carry persons or suspects/prisoners who may be injured, unconscious, or incapacitated.
Effect forceful arrests.
Process crime scenes by fingerprinting, photographing, identifying, packaging, and processing evidence.
Write and file reports by gathering facts, statements, and evidence; prepare and file affidavits.
Enforce traffic codes and regulations; write traffic summons, including DUI enforcement.
Testify in court on matters relating to criminal offenses, traffic, and civil matters.
Serve summons, complaints, warrants, and civil processes.
Contact citizens and businesses in assigned district to identify ongoing problems and recommend solutions.
Attend briefings to become aware of any incidents occurring since previous duty assignment.
Report any critical incidents occurring within the assigned patrol district to the Shift Sergeant.
Assist other Deputies on service calls when necessary.
Perform other duties as required.
