8530-Deputy Probation Officer (SFERS)

City and County of San Francisco•San Francisco, CA
•$92,404 - $149,812

About The Position

Deputy Probation Officers work under supervision for the San Francisco Adult Probation Department or Juvenile Probation Department, helping supervise and rehabilitate adults and juveniles involved in the justice system. They conduct general and pre-sentence investigations, investigate and supervise probationers or court wards, prepare court reports and recommendations, and assist courts with detention, sentencing, disposition, and case-management decisions. Officers counsel probationers and help them comply with court orders while connecting them with educational and vocational services, substance abuse treatment, employment, housing, family therapy, and other community resources. The role also includes intensive case management and a variety of specialized assignments. Officers interview individuals, gather background information, visit people in custody and in the field, conduct home visits, and may make arrests. They may represent the department in court regarding probation compliance and coordinate with law enforcement, victims, families, employers, public health agencies, and community-based organizations. Assignments may involve high-risk populations, including gang-related probationers, repeat offenders, and people involved in drug-related activities. Officers may participate in citywide task forces, assist in training new or reassigned officers, and coordinate clerical or technical staff or supervise less experienced officers when the Supervising Probation Officer is absent. The work may involve individuals facing mental health challenges, aggressive behavior, substance abuse, or homelessness. Officers must maintain professional and ethical conduct and meet California peace officer status requirements. Work hours and locations are determined by departmental needs; nights, weekends, and holidays may be required. Newly hired officers must complete mandatory training during their 12-month probationary period. Adult Probation Department assignments may require carrying a firearm, and those officers must complete firearms training during that period.
