About The Position

The RoanokeRegional Airport Commission is accepting applications from current, qualified, internal personnel only for the position of Deputy Police Chief. This leadership role supports the Director of Public Safety in overseeing all airport law enforcement operations, ensuring the safety, security, and regulatory compliance of the airport environment. Requirements

  • Current employment in good standing with the RRAC Public Safety Department
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field preferred (equivalent experience considered)
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory or leadership experience in a law enforcement agency
  • Virginia law enforcement certification
  • Thorough knowledge of department policies, airport operations, and applicable security regulations
  • Strong leadership and mentorship abilities
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to make sound, timely decisions in high-pressure situations
  • Proven commitment to professionalism, integrity, and public service
  • In-depth understanding of internal procedures and operational workflows

Nice To Haves

  • Prior command-level experience (Lieutenant or above)
  • Experience as an airport police supervisor
  • Advanced training in leadership, emergency management, or incident command systems

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Public Safety in managing daily operations of the Airport Police Department
  • Provide direct supervision, guidance, and evaluation of sworn officers and civilian staff
  • Ensure compliance with TSA regulations and airport security protocols
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness, response planning, and incident command
  • Support the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and training initiatives
  • Maintain effective working relationships with local, state, and federal partners
  • Oversee internal investigations, security assessments, and operational readiness
  • Contribute to budgeting, staffing, and long-term strategic planning
  • Serve as Acting Director of Public Safety when designated
