About The Position

Highly skilled and deeply experienced attorney with well-rounded expertise concerning all major state energy regulatory policy and legal issues. Substantial state utility commission experience required, with a strong preference for extensive litigation and oral advocacy experience. Will have lead responsibility for all North Carolina legal regulatory matters. Will be responsible for providing legal guidance requiring independent judgment and frequent contact with C-suite leadership on matters of highest strategic importance for the enterprise. Able to work under tight timelines and substantial pressure. Prior experience at the North Carolina Utilities Commission is a strong plus, along with relationships with key North Carolina utility regulatory stakeholders. This position works under the direction of a Vice President – State Regulatory Legal Support to advance Duke Energy’s objective of providing reliable service for customers in a manner consistent with all applicable law. The role has four direct reports and three indirect reports. The candidate must be able to: Lead a team through complex and numerous workstreams. Communicate effectively to C-suite leadership in connection with high-stakes matters. Handle highly contentious matters and guide overall strategy on complex and highly technical matters. Manage outside counsel spend Independently develop strategy to achieve outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Doctor of Jurisprudence degree (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Minimum of 12 or more years of experience practicing law
  • Licensed to practice law in North Carolina or Licensed to practice in any state in the US and eligible for admission under North Carolina bar rules
