Deputy General Counsel, Litigation

Liberty Mutual•Boston, MA

About The Position

Liberty Mutual's Global Legal & Compliance (GL&C) organization is undergoing a significant transformation, aiming to be both a protector of the enterprise and an accelerator of business success. GL&C operates at the nexus of risk, regulation, capital, and execution. In response to industry pressures concerning AI governance, data privacy, digital claims, cybersecurity, and evolving global regulations, the organization is taking a leadership role. Legal and compliance expertise is being positioned as a strategic differentiator to enable Liberty Mutual to adapt, operate efficiently, and lead confidently in a dynamic global environment. This role reports to the Chief Legal Officer and is a key member of the GL&C Executive Leadership Team. The Deputy General Counsel will lead GL&C's Litigation Group, comprising 65-70 professionals including attorneys, paralegals, eDiscovery specialists, and litigation support staff. Responsibilities include setting strategic direction, defining work priorities, establishing performance standards, and overseeing talent development. The role provides enterprise-wide oversight of corporate litigation, with a specific focus on bad faith and extra-contractual matters, class actions, coverage disputes, employment, investments, bankruptcies, and other high-exposure or emerging risks. The position serves to protect and defend the enterprise by delivering efficient, insight-driven outcomes that enhance risk selection, proactively identify trends, and support favorable financial performance. The role involves providing senior legal counsel on the company's most critical matters, advising and presenting to the CEO, business line presidents, executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and external auditors. Close collaboration with business leaders is essential to align legal strategy with business objectives. Key partners include the GL&C Leadership Team, senior executives across business units (Global Risk Solutions, US Retail Markets, Investments), and senior executives across corporate functions (People, Purpose & Brand, Technology, Finance, and Strategy).
