As part of the Department of Protective Services/Fire Department, the City of Humboldt is currently seeking to fill one (1) permanent, full-time Deputy Fire Chief position. The Deputy Fire Chief is a senior officer responsible for providing leadership in emergency response, administration, fire prevention, public education, inspections, and investigation. This role supports both operational and administrative functions of the Fire Department and assists other departments as needed. The Deputy Fire Chief plays a key role in incident command during fires, rescues, hazardous materials responses, and large-scale or multi-agency emergencies, ensuring firefighter safety, accountability, and continuity of command in the absence of the Fire Chief. The position also supports firefighter training and development by coordinating training programs, monitoring competencies, ensuring compliance with provincial and national standards, and organizing exercises to maintain operational readiness. In addition to emergency response, the role contributes to overall department management through policy development, regulatory compliance, reporting, budgeting, asset management, scheduling, health and safety documentation, and recruitment and retention initiatives. The Deputy Fire Chief also leads emergency preparedness and community risk reduction efforts, including fire prevention programs, public education, pre-incident planning, emergency coordination, and collaboration with regional partners.
