About The Position

The Deputy Director serves as a senior law enforcement official responsible for preserving public safety and maintaining peace within the jurisdiction. This role oversees the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal activity; the apprehension of offenders; and the delivery of emergency assistance to the public, including the protection of civil rights. The position ensures adherence to all applicable tribal, federal, state, county, and municipal laws, as well as agency policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. The Deputy Director reports directly to the Director of Operations and is responsible for carrying out directives issued by that office.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Eight (8) years of related experience with demonstrated progressive responsibility.
• Must live within Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting.
• Must be eligible for Special Law Enforcement Commission (SLEC) and obtain within six (6) months of hire; and maintain throughout employment.
• Must maintain Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) deputation.
• Must pass the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).
• The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
• Must meet and maintain periodic background adjudication for law enforcement.
• Must maintain no restrictions from testifying in any tribal, state, or federal court while employed with Cherokee Nation Office of the Marshal.

Nice To Haves

• Possess or obtain the Advanced Law Enforcement Certification, First Aid, and CPR certification within the first six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
• Possess and maintain mid-level supervision school certification.
• Complete Command Leadership School within one (1) year of hire.
