About The Position

The Deputy Director will be responsible for managing operational activities and regulatory compliance of the Water and Wastewater Division staff of 25 FTEs. The Division manages water distribution and wastewater collection infrastructure spanning 28 square miles and serving a population of approximately 52,000. The utility system includes: Approximately 225 miles of water distribution mains, Approximately 215 miles of wastewater collection mains, Approximately 16,100 water connections, Seven active ground-level and elevated water storage tanks (with another under construction), Three active wastewater lift stations, One lift station nearing construction completion, One additional lift station in design. The Deputy Director may also have oversight of additional functions of the department to be determined in the selection process based on the selected applicant's experience. This position's primary responsibilities include to lead and manage aspects of the assigned operational divisions and functional areas within the department. This includes budgeting, short and long-range planning, directing staff, operations, programs, and activities that align with city and department goals and objectives. Provides technical and professional assistance to internal and external parties.

Requirements

  • Experience managing water distribution and wastewater collection systems
  • Class A Water Distribution Operator License
  • Class I Wastewater Collection Operator License
  • Strong knowledge of and experience meeting regulatory compliance requirements
  • Experience developing and monitoring operating budgets
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience preparing and delivering public presentations
  • The ability to oversee multiple teams and operational functions
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
  • Water Distribution and wastewater collection systems experience required.
  • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal government with preference given to public works experience.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory responsibility.
  • Valid Class "C" Driver License with a good driving record that is maintained continuously while employed.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
