About The Position

NYC Parks’ mission is to grow, maintain and program a world-class park system prioritizing equity, access, safety, and nature. The Forestry Division aims to protect, restore, care for and expand New York City Parks, nature and tree canopy to maximize environmental health, community well-being and resilience. This position is ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT FULL-TIME ANNUALLY PAID PARKS EMPLOYEES.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with major study in horticulture, arboriculture, or landscape architecture and four years of full-time, paid experience in horticultural work of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive capacity; or
  • A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must have at least a high school diploma or evidence of having passed an examination for a high school equivalency diploma and one year of supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described above.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Director of Tree Preservation, with some latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, prepare, manage and track the progress of forestry maintenance contracts across NYC.
  • Manage all aspects of the Forestry Maintenance Contracts program, including contracts, budgets, operations, reporting, policies and procedures.
  • Lead strategic planning and implementation of standardized contract management practices across all forestry units.
  • Design and draft contract books, including specifications and engineer’s estimates. Work in partnership with Purchasing and Accounting, General Counsel and other agency stakeholders to incorporate and/or amend applicable contract articles to work with the highly specialized nature of the contracts.
  • Determine budget allocations for each contract and/or borough. Perform data analyses to inform the allocations. Work in close coordination with the capital and expense contracts teams to process budget allocations and payments.
  • Lead the effort in the recruitment of new forestry vendors, with a focus on increasing the utilization of Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (M/WBEs).
  • Coordinate with Borough Forestry Directors and staff to ensure consistent application of contract management, tree work and safety protocols.
  • Prepare briefings, reports, evaluations, budgets and correspondence.
  • Provide regular updates on the status of various projects and programs and ensure that projects advance in a timely manner.
  • Support the division and agency in response to forestry storm events, including tracking emergency contract utilization.
