About The Position

The City of Hampton's Community Development Department is seeking a forward-thinking Deputy Director with the experience and vision to help shape the community’s long-term growth and development. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in long-range planning, comprehensive and master plan development and implementation, and the drafting and administration of planning ordinances and regulations. Candidates should be experienced in translating community goals and policy direction into thoughtful, sustainable development strategies and actionable plans. A background in architecture, urban design, or a closely related field is highly preferred, as is demonstrated success working across disciplines to create high-quality, vibrant, and resilient communities. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Architecture, Engineering, Planning, Building Construction Technology, Public Administration, or a related field of study.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of local, state, or federal government experience in a field relevant to the key areas of the CDD.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience serving in progressively responsible managerial, supervisory, or senior leadership roles.
  • Proven track record in setting and achieving strategic goals.
  • Demonstrated leadership in support of organizational mission and values.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a diverse customer base to deliver effective solutions with a keen commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of accuracy and efficiency in exercising duties and responsibilities.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to an offer of employment or promotion.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage long and short-range plans.

  • Travel frequently throughout the City.
  • Engage in extensive contact with the City Manager's office, City Council, department heads, Board and Commission members, employees, citizens, contractors, federal agencies, and a variety of outside agencies and organizations.
  • Serve as "essential personnel" during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
