About The Position

The Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC), founded in 1993, is a premier communication policy center dedicated to producing cutting-edge communication science and enhancing the impact of communication scholarship to improve public well-being. APPC conducts research and translates findings to advance public understanding and policy at local, state, and national levels through its research divisions and institutes. These include communication science, institutions of democracy, climate communication, science of science communication, civics, and health and risk. APPC also oversees the FactCheck.org project and the Annenberg Center for Advanced Study in Communication (ACASC). Working closely with the APPC Director, the Deputy Director will support and assist in the research and implementation of APPC’s strategic priorities and vision both within and outside of the University of Pennsylvania. This role involves monitoring, reporting, and presenting APPC’s progress to stakeholders, potential partners, and diverse audiences. The Deputy Director will also be responsible for developing research and strategic partnerships across and outside of the University to further APPC’s goals.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Arts, and 7 to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Success in developing and disseminating research.
  • Excellent public speaking and verbal communication skills, able to communicate well and at varying levels of technical/academic detail with diverse audiences, including students, staff, faculty, post-docs, community, industry, and government stakeholders, and the public.
  • Excellent writing skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A PhD in a behavioral or social science (e.g., psychology, communication, sociology, political science) or in computer/information science is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a research university, an understanding of academic scientific administration, and a proven track record of successful research in this setting desirable.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and developing more junior staff is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an active program of collaborative or independent research in an area relevant to APPC.
  • Work with the APPC Director to launch and administer initiatives to foster innovative research, including publicizing grant opportunities, managing review and selection of grant proposals, and publicizing grant deliverables and results.
  • Build and sustain transdisciplinary partnerships to promote APPC’s mission at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Effectively communicate with a wide audience of interdisciplinary faculty researchers, practitioners, administrators, policy makers, and community stakeholders, including writing APPC activity reports, convening groups, and preparing and delivering presentations about APPC activities for diverse audiences.
  • Help the director run the day-to-day activities of the center, including budgets, reports, and infrastructure.
  • Represent APPC at scientific meetings, convenings, and other events to promote APPC’s mission and work and build its network.
  • Supervise APPC personnel.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
