About The Position

The City of Pittsburgh Department of Parks and Recreation seeks a Deputy Director who will also serve as the new Head of the Office of Youth and Families. The Office of Youth and Families (OYF) is a new office within Citiparks focused on enriching the lives of youth and their families to help make Pittsburgh every family's first choice. The Head of OYF will be responsible for establishing this new Office by building upon existing recreational programs and creating new programmatic opportunities for youth and families. This will include collaborating with external organizations and community groups to create programming at City recreation centers and facilities, liaising with offices and departments within the City on programming and keeping them informed of the Office’s work, and increasing awareness and the number of families with access to this programming. To fulfill this, the City of Pittsburgh seeks a creative and collaborative leader who is experienced in managing teams and external organizations to provide the best experience for youth and families.

Requirements

  • Must submit or show proof of all General Requirements at the time of application.
  • Must submit a complete application, including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable), and completed supplemental questions.
  • Must become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and remain residents throughout employment.
  • A current, valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License (or out of state equivalent) is required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Applicants must obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certificates within six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment.
  • Applicants must obtain Pennsylvania Act 153 Clearance prior to appointment.
  • Candidates being considered for employment must submit official transcripts verifying post-secondary education (college/university, trade school, etc.) prior to hire.
  • Six (6) years of full-time managerial experience in K-12 education, youth programming, business management, budget management, personnel management, or a related field.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Education, Business Management, Social Services, Parks & Recreation Management, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Creates a short and long-term strategic plan for the Office of Youth and Families.
  • Develops, coordinates, and oversees the execution of programming at Citiparks recreation centers for youth and their families in partnership with other community groups and external organizations.
  • Manages the Office’s budget dedicated to programming.
  • Oversees Citiparks programming that is folded into the Office of Youth and Families.
  • Acts as a primary point of contact, partner, and coordinator for all external organizations and community groups in the areas that work on programming for youth and families.
  • Spearheads outreach and marketing efforts to increase the participation of youth and families across all recreation centers and Citiparks activities.
  • Coordinates across other City Departments on any programming serving youth and families.
  • Regularly visits recreation centers to engage with youth and families and surveys their experiences with city-run or city-coordinated programming.
  • Collects data on program attendance to track community engagement and demonstrates areas of success in engaging youth and families.
  • Develops staff and organizational capacity through mentorship, training, and strategic hiring decisions.
  • Assists with the development and recommendation of approved rules, regulations, policies, and procedures for the Department.
  • Supervises assigned personnel; evaluates work and performance; recommends and implements approved disciplinary and/or corrective action; provides training and/or technical assistance as requested or required.
  • Supports overall budget planning and requests on behalf of the Department’s needs.
  • Represents the Department Director and Mayor at conferences, meetings, etc., as assigned.
  • Performs other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
