About The Position

The Deputy Communications Director supports the Communications Director in developing and executing strategic messaging for SEIU United Service Workers West, representing more than 50,000 property service workers across California. This position helps lead day-to-day communications operations and manages campaigns that advance the union's organizing, bargaining, political, legislative, and member engagement goals.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university in relevant field with at least five (5) years of related work experience that would provide for the following knowledge of, skills and abilities:
  • Proven commitment to social and economic justice and improving the lives of working
  • Experience as a communicator developing an effective public, media and internal communications plan for a policy campaign or organizing campaign.
  • Demonstrated written, verbal, visual/graphic, interviewing and analytical communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in team environment, including a high level of self-motivation
  • Ability to drive work independently, manage assignments, stay organized and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent communication orally and in Bilingual – English & Spanish, preferred
  • Experience developing effective social media and remote/digital organizing campaigns, preferred
  • Advanced Layout and design skills, website design, use of Google G Suite and Microsoft Office Suite, preferred
  • Experience taking photos; shooting and editing video preferred
  • Ability to travel in California, ability to work extended and irregular hours, and work remotely, if needed
  • Valid drivers’ license, use of a car for work, and specified automobile insurance coverage are mandatory
  • Work is generally performed in an office setting with prolonged periods of sitting and work on computer

Nice To Haves

  • Preferably experience working on campaigns with a labor union or non-profit.
  • Bilingual – English & Spanish, preferred
  • Experience developing effective social media and remote/digital organizing campaigns, preferred
  • Advanced Layout and design skills, website design, use of Google G Suite and Microsoft Office Suite, preferred
  • Experience taking photos; shooting and editing video preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement communications strategies for organizing contract, political, legislative, and issue campaigns.
  • Write and edit press releases, media advisories, speeches, talking points, newsletters, website content, emails, and social media.
  • Serve as a primary media contact and build relationships with media outlets and reporters
  • Manage digital communications, including social media, email communications, and website updates.
  • Help plan and execute press conferences, rallies, member actions, and other public events.
  • Supervise communications staff, consultants, vendors, and member leaders as assigned.
  • Support the Communications Director in setting priorities, managing projects, and overseeing the department's daily operations.
