About The Position

The Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney is a key leader within the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, supervising both experienced and new prosecutors while advancing the office's mission of pursuing justice with integrity, fairness, and accountability. This position leads one of six units: Violent Crimes, Special Investigations, Domestic Violence, Juvenile Offenders, Special Victims, or Patrol Cases. The Deputy oversees the daily operations of their assigned unit, including reviewing and assigning incoming cases, providing strategic guidance on complex legal matters, and ensuring the effective, ethical, and equitable prosecution of cases. They serve as mentors and supervisors, fostering the professional growth of attorneys through coaching, collaboration, and annual performance evaluations. In addition to managing the unit's work, the Deputies participate in the office's on-call rotation, attend and present legal training, teach at the police academy, and build strong partnerships with law enforcement, community organizations, and residents. They represent the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office at public meetings and civic events, helping strengthen trust and transparency with the communities served.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.)
  • Substantial experience prosecuting criminal cases
  • Significant felony jury trial experience
  • Demonstrated success leading and mentoring legal professionals
  • Strong commitment to the fair, ethical, and impartial administration of justice
  • Excellent judgment, legal research, writing, and courtroom advocacy skills
  • Ability to manage a complex criminal caseload while balancing competing priorities
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and developing attorneys in a collaborative environment
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues, law enforcement partners, victims, witnesses, and community stakeholders
  • A leadership style grounded in professionalism, accountability, empathy, and continuous improvement
  • Must be a member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing
