About The Position

The City of Las Vegas is establishing an eligible list for Corrections Officer and Deputy City Marshal. A single employment application and assessment process will be used for both positions. This is an entry-level law-enforcement position with no written test required. The recruitment process includes a Physical Readiness Test, background investigation, polygraph, psychological suitability assessment, medical fit-for-duty examination, pre-academy physical readiness test, and drug testing. Candidates are prohibited from having tattoos or any other visible markings on their faces or collarbones, though exceptions may be made for hands and neck tattoos. Officers may grow a beard no longer than one-half inch. The department uses the Nevada Administrative Code Section 289.200 physical fitness standards for law enforcement recruits. Communication throughout the process will primarily be via email.

Requirements

  • One year of work experience (does NOT have to be law enforcement). A Bachelor's degree in any field may substitute for the one year of work experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school date of application.
  • Appropriate valid driver's license date of application and maintenance thereafter.
  • Be at least 21 years of age at the time of job offer.
  • Be a United States citizen at time of job offer.
  • Have no conviction of a felony in the state of Nevada, or any offense which would be considered a felony if committed in the state of Nevada.
  • Have no conviction of any crime for which you were required to register and/or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence including use or attempted use of physical force.
  • Have no conviction of unlawful use, sale, or possession of a control substance.
  • No convictions with the past 12 months, including DUI.
  • Drug use (including marijuana and steroids) may be disqualifying.
  • Two or more alcohol related incidents in the past 48 months is disqualifying.
  • Suspensions, revocations or cancelations of driver's license within the last three years will be reviewed on an individual basis.
  • Separation from any branch of the United States Armed Forces under less than "honorable" conditions, or separation honorably from the Armed Forces for reasons of unsuitability or misconduct is disqualifying.
  • Any active warrant at the time of background interview is disqualifying.
  • Decertification from any law enforcement agency is disqualifying.
  • Termination for cause by another criminal justice agency is disqualifying.
  • Any misrepresentations, either intentionally or unintentionally, will be grounds for disqualification.
  • Physical Readiness Test (PASS or FAIL): Vertical Jump (15 inches), Agility Run (19.5 seconds), Sit-Ups (30 qualifying sit-ups in 60 seconds), Push-Ups (23 qualifying push-ups; no time limit; but can rest in up position), 300 Meter Run (68 seconds), 1.5 Mile Run (16 minutes, 57 seconds)

Responsibilities

  • Deputy City Marshals perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of state statutes, city ordinances and other city regulations as defined in state statutes and city ordinance on any real property owned, leased or otherwise under the control of the City of Las Vegas.

  • Pursue individuals observed committing criminal acts
  • Issue citations
  • Arrest individuals pursuant to a warrant
  • Remove abandoned vehicles
  • Serve warrants
  • Pursue and arrest felons
  • Aid victims of crime
  • Secure crime scenes
  • Protect other officers and members of the public
  • Maintain custody and control of inmates being detained in the City's detention facilities
  • Enforce laws and departmental regulations that apply to detention and corrections.
