About The Position

This position is ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT FULL-TIME ANNUALLY PAID PARKS EMPLOYEES. Under administrative direction of the Chief of Operations, with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and decision, this role oversees the management and operations of a borough, including pools, playgrounds, beaches, and ballfields. The position helps plan and provide support for the annual preparation of seasonal facilities. It also participates in the formulation of long-term goals and plans, and develops policy to ensure coordination and effective delivery of services for borough operations. The role involves planning and implementing actions to improve the borough’s ratings and performance as determined by the Parks Inspection Program and managed through the Asset Management Park System (AMPS). It includes conducting inspections, assessing performance of district operations, and recommending sites for cleanup, paving, reconstruction, and repair work. The Deputy Chief of Operations oversees Technical Services, Borough Crews, and Forestry and Horticulture operations for the borough. Communication with district managers and borough crews is key, directing the allocation of borough-wide resources to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner and according to agency specifications. The role monitors the dispatching of the borough’s vehicles and tracks the use of equipment to ensure they are maintained in proper working condition. It also oversees schedules of each district, tracks employees’ compensatory time, annual leave, sick leave, and overtime. The position tracks donations and prioritizes allocation of funds, and oversees the Other than Personal Services (OTPS) budget. The Deputy Chief of Operations makes comprehensive presentations to community boards and public officials in response to their needs and concerns, and coordinates with other city agencies to combine efforts in maintaining high-quality services in communities. Participation in the planning and implementation of capital projects is also a significant part of this role.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four (4) years of full-time paid experience in: park management, park or urban rehabilitation, urban or regional planning, forestry or horticulture, landscape architecture, or a related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or in supervision of professional staff working in one or more of the above mentioned areas.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.
  • All candidates must possess the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described above.
