About The Position

Performs professional and administrative work assisting in managing the operations of the County's Medical Examiner Division. Formulates long-range goals for the organization, develops policy and position papers and negotiates with the chief administrative officer and/or elected officials.

Requirements

• Graduation from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation.
• Five (5) years as an Associate Medical Examiner with demonstrated high proficiency and knowledge in the medical practice of pathology and forensic pathology.
• At least two (2) years' experience in a supervisory or leadership role in forensic pathology within the last five (5) years as an Associate Medical Examiner.
• Board certified in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical and Forensic Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
• Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License.
• Licensed as a medical doctor by the State of Florida.

Responsibilities

• Assists in developing, evaluating and revising the operational policies and procedures of the Pathology section.
• Assists in administering the County's forensic medical programs.
• Directs through subordinates the planning, scheduling and coordination of divisional activities.
• Represents the Medical Examiner's Office at meetings and conferences.
• Develops and maintains professional working relationships with hospital authorities and the medical community.
• Administers the Forensic Pathology fellow/fellowship program and maintaining accreditation through ACGME.
• Performs autopsies, examinations and death scene investigations.
• Reviews cases through analysis of autopsies, laboratory findings and case investigation reports.
• Plans and supervises the work of the Pathology staff, residents and visiting Pathologists.
• Furnishes law enforcement officials with medical and scientific evidence.
• Testifies in deposition and trial activities as an expert witness.
• Explains causes of death to relatives of the deceased.
• Researches, prepares and presents scientific papers.
• Performs related work as assigned.
