About The Position

The Intake and Assessments Bureau (“IAB”) at the Queens District Attorney’s office is considering candidates for the hybrid position of Day/Evening Deputy Bureau Chief. This Deputy Chief’s work week will include both days and nights in a schedule to be determined. The Intake and Assessment Bureau (“IAB”) manages and supervises attorneys and support staff assessing and analyzing charges at the arrest stage of a criminal prosecution.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree
  • Active member of the New York State bar in good standing
  • At least 7 years post-J.D. experience
  • Demonstrated experience assisting junior assistants and trial prep assistants in case analysis and enhancement
  • Demonstrated experience in training, interacting and/or liaising with other law enforcement agencies
  • Felony jury trial experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the New York Penal and Criminal Procedure Law
  • Strong knowledge of criminal justice reform, with a vision on how to expand the role of the Intake and Assessment Bureau
  • Thorough working knowledge of the Intake and Arraignment process
  • Demonstrated ability to work and respond in a high-volume fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Superior organizational skills
  • United States citizenship is required upon commencement of employment
  • New York State residency is required upon commencement of employment

Responsibilities

  • Supervising and managing IAB attorneys and support staff
  • Training IAB attorneys and support staff on standards and burdens of proof; and complaint drafting
  • Training IAB attorneys in best practices to enhance overall job performance including investigatory, trial advocacy and litigation skills and application of the highest ethical standards
  • Supporting the professional development of TPA/Paralegals by implementing training programs for new TPA/Paralegals and ongoing training for senior TPA/Paralegals
  • Providing direct and ongoing supervision to TPA/Paralegals
  • Monitoring individual performance and drafting performance evaluations
  • Overseeing short and long term projects
  • Interfacing and troubleshooting as necessary with other agencies and groups including NYPD, Corporation Counsel, medical care providers, defense providers and counterparts at other district attorneys’ offices
  • Generating policy and statistical reports on bail applications
  • Maintaining weekly schedule of IAB attorneys and support staff
  • Maintaining timekeeping records
  • Performing other relevant duties as determined by management.
