Reuters is seeking a dynamic, scoopy reporter to cover the Department of Justice, Attorney General Pam Bondi and federal law enforcement from our Washington, D.C. bureau. The DOJ stands at the center of the nation’s most critical legal and political battles, making it an essential source of news and insight about the workings of the nation’s capital, with broad impacts for the United States and its democracy. Reuters aims to illuminate the changes the administration has made within the Justice Department and how the administration is using the DOJ to shape the course of major U.S. institutions, including state and local governments, universities and companies, as well as the lives of average Americans. Covering the DOJ requires sharp news sense, a hunger to break news and sophisticated chops as a builder and maintainer of sources. This person will work in tandem with our current DOJ reporter and FBI reporter to chronicle the machinations of the nation’s legal machinery through major criminal and civil litigation, with a particular eye toward elevating the most urgent story lines with aggressive reporting and effective storytelling. Covering the DOJ’s involvement in elections and voting will be a top priority but far from the only one, so shrewd judgement identifying and executing high-value story targets is a must.
