About The Position

Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Bioenergy Feedstock Technologies Group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Department Manager! This department leads the research, development and verification of technical programs that will revolutionize the nation's clean energy portfolio through technology development of feedstocks for biofuels, bioproducts, and biomaterials. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

Requirements

  • MS degree in a science or engineering field of study with (5+) years of related professional experience.
  • Minimum 3 years’ professional leadership experience managing teams.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy “Q” Clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
  • Knowledge of and experience in bioenergy feedstock processing.
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with customers, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of quality assurance principles and procurement processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at a DOE national laboratory, DOE, or experience in engaging with DOE.
  • Experience in engaging program sponsors at DOE, industry and other federal agencies.
  • Knowledge of and experience in critical material recycling technologies.
  • Ability to obtain an Q clearance.
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.

Responsibilities

  • 70% management responsibilities and 30% performing research activities.
  • Effectively lead and motivate over 23 researchers toward increasing the numbers and impact of technical products (papers, presentations, patents, etc.) that raise the scientific eminence of the department.
  • Participate and lead planning to integrate and grow capabilities and ensure work is performed safely and within budget parameters and scope and be the Funds Manager for approximately $20-$25M million in annual work scope.
  • Lead all aspects of the technical quality of all reports, publications, and data that demonstrates technical leadership in area of study/field.
  • Provide support to the Biomass Feedstock National User Facility and Bioenergy Relationship Manager to grow the business to enable high impact research.
  • Oversee activities of significant organizational impact, influencing methods, techniques, and team outcomes.
  • Manage budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and performance expectations to ensure goals are met.
  • Supervise teams performing similar work; may include managing supervisors and both exempt and nonexempt employees.
  • Allocate resources and determine strategies to meet objective based assignments.
  • Contribute to long term departmental, divisional and directorate strategy.
  • Conduct technical research and participate actively in R&D strategy.
  • Collaborate across groups, engaging frequently with other managers, customers, peers, and external partners.
  • Communicate and present technical findings, recommendations, and program updates across disciplines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
