About The Position

This position is located at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City, NC. The position provides primary dental care and treatment for Pasquotank CI. The role involves taking and reviewing medical and dental histories, performing examinations of hard and soft tissues, and initiating appropriate dental care and treatment for offender patients. The Dentist will also order diagnostic studies, arrange for follow-up and consultation, and supervise dental staff in areas such as oral surgery, endodontics, prosthetics, and periodontics. Responsibilities include accurate documentation of procedures in dental and medical charts, monitoring infection control, providing oral hygiene instructions, and informing offenders of diagnostic and treatment concerns. The position is also responsible for documentation of weekly spore testing, equipment maintenance, assessing offender and staff needs for program adjustments, supervising the daily tasks of the dental assistant, evaluating operations, and suggesting solutions. The Dentist will provide written responses to offender grievances and legal inquiries when necessary, maintain a professional demeanor, and ensure positive communication with dental, medical, and custody staff.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Takes and reviews medical and dental history and performs examination of hard and soft tissues.
  • Initiates appropriate dental care and treatment of offender patients.
  • Orders appropriate diagnostic studies, arranges for follow up and consultation.
  • Supervises the dental staff in their practice of dentistry in the areas of oral surgery, endodontics, prosthetics and periodontics.
  • Provides proper and accurate documentation of procedures in dental and medical charts.
  • Monitors all aspects of infection control including barrier techniques for staff, equipment and proper sterilization of instruments.
  • Ensures offenders are provided oral hygiene instructions and informs offenders of diagnostic and treatment concerns.
  • Responsible for documentation of weekly spore testing and maintenance procedures of equipment.
  • Assesses offender and staff needs to determine the need for new programs or program adjustments.
  • Supervises daily tasks of dental assistant and delegates duties for the effective operation of the dental office.
  • Evaluates operations and procedures, analyzes deficiencies and suggests solutions.
  • Provide written responses to offender grievances and written responses to DAC Legal when necessary.
  • Maintains professional demeanor and ensures positive communication with dental, medical and custody staff for effective operation of the dental office.
