About The Position

The University of Rochester is seeking a Dental Program Trainee to participate in a 12-month on-the-job dental assistant training program. This program includes classroom learning, observation, and hands-on clinical training within the EIOH department of General Dentistry. The trainee will learn to assist dentists, maintain sterile environments, utilize four-handed techniques, and manage clinical supplies and patient records. The role also involves operating specialized equipment, taking radiographs, performing basic dental laboratory procedures, and entering patient data into electronic medical records.

Requirements

  • High School diploma preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to communicate and interact well with patients, providers and staff preferred.
  • Valid work permit required.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and perform chairside assistance to dentists and other providers.
  • Learn to maintain a sterile environment and aseptic technique.
  • Learn and perform "four-handed" techniques, including retracting patient's cheek or tongue, operating oral vacuum evacuating equipment, and applying water and air to the field of operation.
  • Anticipate day-to-day needs in the clinical environment, including armamentarium, nitrogen tank, and other specific equipment, material and supply needs for patient and provider to ensure smooth operations and patient safety.
  • Review patient records to prepare for the complexity of each visit and/or procedure and the time frame required so that the patient schedule may be maintained or modified as needed.
  • Set-up and use specialized equipment for documentation of vital signs including pulse oximetry during nitrous oxide or IV sedation cases.
  • Clean and maintain equipment.
  • Learn and adopt necessary skills to take intra-oral, extra-oral, and panorex radiographs.
  • Anticipate diagnostic needs.
  • Develop and mount radiographs.
  • Notify of patient arrival and escort patients through the clinic.
  • Provide special assistance for non-ambulatory patients.
  • Follow standard clinical safety protocol for Patient Identification Verification.
  • Learn and adopt necessary skills to perform instrument sterilization.
  • Enter patient data into the electronic medical record.
  • Review discharge instructions with patient as prepared by provider.
  • Learn and adopt necessary skills to perform basic dental laboratory procedures such as pouring models for dentures, partials, and crown models, making bite guards or setting up fluoride trays for preventive therapy.
  • Other duties as assigned.
