About The Position

The Dental Hygienist will provide dental prophylaxis, preventive oral health services, and periodontal services for Adults in Custody (AIC) referred by the Dental Staff and will assist the Dental Officer with other related duties. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, with working hours typically Monday through Friday, between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. Due to the nature of the correctional setting, delays in work performance may occur due to various factors.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be certified/licensed as a Dental Hygienist in the State of Texas
  • Dental radiology certification required
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC) or the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Dental Hygienist.
  • Three (3) letters of reference from professional peers for verification of credentials.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in maintaining medical records and confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • Anesthesia certification preferred.
  • Correctional Environment experience is preferred.
  • Bilingual oral communication skills are desirable.
  • Experience in a clinical correctional setting is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dental prophylaxis, other preventative oral health services, and other periodontal services for Adults in Custody (AIC) who are referred to by the Dental Staff.
  • Provide thorough individualized oral hygiene instructions for each patient.
  • Complete necessary dental x-rays as specified by the dentist.
  • Monitor oral hygiene and periodontal condition on each patient seen for dental prophylaxis.
  • Sterilize instruments used for prophylaxis and other instruments as specified by the Dental Staff.
  • Provide oral health care services such as suture removal, administration of local anesthetic, and other services (if trained).
  • Oversee AIC Health Service's Workers' housekeeping and infection control procedures.
  • Perform necessary paperwork related to scheduling patients for dental prophylaxis and other Dental Services as directed by the Dental Staff.
  • Maintain medical records and confidentiality.
  • Collect and track data and enter data in the agency's electronic system.
  • Track scheduling of patient care.
  • Follow BOP, Dental Service, and institutional policies to include Employee Standards of Conduct, security, infection control, regulated waste management, and data management.
  • Perform minor clerical duties, such as use of BOP electronic medical record, computer documentation and scheduling, scanning documents, filing, typing, callouts, institutional memorandums, answering phones, scheduling patients and maintaining stock records.
